A Marble Mantlepiece

The hard intransigent surface

Resolved itself to form

In some primordial age

Crystallizing essence into stone

The intrinsic substance of the moment

Past encapsulated in present

Present encapsulated in past

Future stretching out unknown

Ephemeral joys stand in line

Beneath the ticking of the clock

As Peter, Joan and Mary

Proudly smile in old school ties

I search to find the moment

That reality within

The meaning and the reason

The unhappiness unseen

Transient travelers fading fast

So soon to be undone

The cold stone will be undone

As all, in time, will be undone

The stone stares back in silence

A mocking speechless reminder

Of the stillness of the moment

And our fleeting passing passions,

No sooner come… than gone.
