Imani averette
Sunday, August 3rd, 11:42pm

Imani was sat on her brother's bed as she watched Isaiah and Iyana play fortnite with each other. It was the night before their first day of school, and all three siblings were trying to enjoy their last night of freedom. She listened to her siblings yell at each other on the game, a laugh escaping her lips every now and then. The three siblings had been enjoying each others company a lot more this summer than usual. Not to say that they didn't already spend a lot of time with each other, because they did. The thing that drew them closer to each other over the past two months was them dealing with their mother's death.

Their mother died recently this summer, May 23rd to be exact, after being ran over. The sudden death had took a toll on the family. Summer Averette was the light in the household. She always found a way to make every situation light hearted, whenever someone was in a bad mood she knew just the joke that would make them laugh, and she could light up any room she was in. Her name had honestly represented the woman so much. She was full of light, and something about her aura was vibrant. Just being around her would lift your spirits and place a big smile on your face. Summer definitely left a mark on the Averette household. That's why when the doctors told them she was gone, Imani felt the light inside of her flicker.

The three siblings were always in each others company to keep each others mind occupied. Why would they try and face their mother's death alone when they didn't have to?

Isaiah turned around, facing Imani noticing how she hadn't said anything in the time that they had all been together. "You real quiet mani, what you thinking about?" Isaiah questioned, before turning back around to face the game.

"School," she answered the boy honestly, feeling nervous about starting at a new school. It was a big jump going from Florida to New York. Not the she didn't like being in the city, but she definitely missed her home state.

Iyana raised her finger in the air, stopping Imani from saying anything else, "What did I say about mentioning school around me?" she reminded her, making Imani laugh.

Imani threw a pillow at her, making the girl turn around to look at her offended. Isaiah turned the girls head back around, so she could see the screen and pay attention to the fact that she was getting shot at. "See what you did Imani! I'm bout to die."

Imani looked at her confused on how she was gonna blame that on her. "I didn't tell you to turn around." Imani remarked.

"How yall feel about going back to," Iyana gave Isaiah a look before he finished his sentence, ".. ya' know tomorrow?" Isaiah questioned, leaving out the word school as he didn't wanna hear what Iyana had to say.

"I hope we get the same lunch so I don't gotta eat by myself." Imani expressed, as that was one of her many stresses of starting at a new school. Imani wasn't that great at making new friends because she would never go up to anyone. Unless someone came up to Imani, she'd be lonely the whole school year.

it was hard for Imani to leave her only, and best friend, back in Florida. Leaving her friend, Jocelynn, was probably one of the most painful parts of moving.

"Who said we was sitting with you?" Isaiah teased, making the two oldest siblings laugh. Imani had picked up another pillow that she intended to throw at him, but he apologized before it could leave her hand. "Okay, be calm, I was just joking."

Iyana shrugged her shoulders, "Shit, I was being forreal," she revealed, making Imani's mouth fall agape. "but I guess since the two of yall sitting together, I'll bless yall with my company."

Isaiah kissed his teeth, "Yo company ain't no blessing."

Iyana rolled her eyes, not letting him distract her from trying to get a kill, "Isaiah i'm telling you now if we don't win this round I'm fucking beating yo ass." Iyana threatened, but everyone in the room knows it was an empty threat.

"You can't beat my ass any other day, what makes today different?" Isaiah joked, making Imani laugh.

Whenever Imani was with her siblings, she couldn't force the smile that always seemed to appear in her face. They never gave her any room to think too hard on anything, because they always snapped her out of her thoughts. They knew how to keep her in the moment by exchanging jokes with each other. Most days, Imani would just sit and listen to them go back and fourth, then added her two sense when it felt necessary.

Imani looked down at her phone seeing the time read 11:57pm. She got up from Isaiah's bed, telling them she was going to sleep. She walked to her room which was only a couple steps away from both Iyana and Isaiah's room. She walked into her room that was still bland. She hadn't got the time to decorate it because she had only just finished unpacking all of her things.

She fell down onto her bed, grabbing the stuffed bear her mom bought her long before she passed. Imani brought the bear with her when she went to visit her mother's grave for the first time. Seeing her mother grave after she passed was the first, and last, time she cried since her mom passed.

Imani visited the grave on her own, as everyone made separate visits when they decided the were ready. Imani was the last to go visit her mother, she almost had to force herself to go.

Seeing her mom made her feel weak. Imani never cried. She hadn't cried in front of her family since she was a baby. When she visited her mom's grave it was the first time she had cried in front of a family member, and since then Imani had sworn to herself that it wouldn't happen again.

Imani was snapped out of her thought hearing her phone ringing next to her. She turned over to see Jocelynn was calling her and a faint smile appeared on her face as she accepted it.

When the call connected Imani saw Jocelynn sitting at her vanity. "Hi manii, I was thinking of you, and then I was starting to miss you, so I called." Jocelynn greeted her with a vibrant smile plastered on her face.

Imani looked at her with a lazy smile, trying to muster up some energy to talk to her. Imani found it hard to make conversation when she was tired, but she knew their time difference and she was willing to try for Jocelynn. "Hi joceyy, I'm missing you too. New York would be so much more fun if you were here."

"I have to go to New York now and see you. Florida is the worst without you. I might come in move in with you." Jocelynn joked.

"Just stay in Florida and we can move in together. There are way too many rats here for my liking." Imani emphasized. Imani had seen rats before back in Florida, but the ones here were on a different level.

"Can't be much different to the rats in Florida, except the ones here are human size." she joked, making Imani laugh. The two girls talked to each other for the rest of the night before falling asleep.
