As Jun-hee cradled the baby in her arm, the door flew open and a tagger stood in the door way. He stood there a knife tightly gripped in his hand, ready to strike.
But he froze, eyes widening at the sight of a newborn in Jun-hee's arms. But the shock didn't last. As the man suddenly lunged forwards, Hyun-ju reached for the knife you had given him earlier.
The man charged, eyes locked onto you. You were the closest to the door, and easy target. Just as he reached out, Hyun-ju moved fast, knife in hand.
He almost drove into the attackers side, but the man twisted at the last second, and grabbed hyun-ju's arm mid-strike. They struggled, bodies crashing together, and then stumbled over each other, They tumbled out of the room, the door slamming back against the wall.
You started to rise, ready to run after them. But Geum-ja grabbed your arm holding you back.
She shook her head firmly. "Your hurt, Y/N. Its dangerous."
You hesitated, heart pounding torn between instinct and reason.
"Hyun-ju's strong," She said, her voice calm but urgent. He can handle this. Trust him."
You shook your head, stubbornly. "He helped me too." Despite the pain, you limped towards the door, determination pushing you forward. You peaked out, just in time to hear the struggles continuing the hall.
Hyun-ju's voice rang out, strained, breathless. "Stay back, Y/N. Its dangerous!"
You froze, heart clenching, torn between the urge to help and the weight of his words echoing in your chest. Just as you were about to step out, Geum-ja grabbed you and yanked you back inside. The door slammed shut behind you.
You spun around, eyes wide with frustration, trying to push past her. "Let me go, he needs help!"
Geum-ja blocked your path, firm and unyielding. "And we need you," she snapped, her voice trembling with fear. "Don't make him fight for nothing."
Suddenly the door creaked open. Hyun-ju stepped in side, face smeared with someone else's blood, his leg was gashed bleeding. But he was still standing.
"Hyun-ju," you breathed, your voice soft, stunned.
He gave a tired smile. "I found the exit." He said. We can get out of here together. Come on, hurry."
Just as hope flickered in the room. A sharp stab sounded. Hyun-ju's smile faded. He groaned staggering forward, eyes wide in shock.
Another sickening stab echoed through the room. Hyun-ju gasped as the blade struck again, the knife he was holding slipped from His hand, cluttering uselessly to the floor. His body crumbled forward, revealing the figure behind him.
His gaze briefly locked with Jun-hee's. You didn't bother with that.
You couldn't move. Your eyes stayed fixed on Hyun-ju's still form. The world around you faded, your breath caught, your body frozen. Shock wrapped around you like ice.
He wasn't moving. Hyun-ju wasn't moving.
Just as another tagger approached the doorway, the first man turned slamming the door shut, blocking the entrance.
"There's no one left in there." He mumbled to the other guy, voice low and firm.
Then silence.
You slowly limped over to Hyun-ju's body, your legs barely holding you up. Kneeling beside him, you reached out with a trembling hand and shook his shoulder.
"Hyun-ju..." You whispered, your voice cracking.
He didn't move.
Then you cried.
Cried like the day you found out your brother needed surgery.
Cried like the day your mother died.
Cried like the day your father left you behind, along with his crushing debt.
You tugged his body into your arms, hugging him tightly, as if holding him back would somehow bring him back. That's when you knew. You really loved him.
Behind you, the sound of sobbing filled the room. Jun-hee and Geum-ja both cried with you. You didn't look back. Couldn't. Then you felt Geum-ja arms gently wrap around you from behind, her embrace warm and trembling.
After awhile, Geum-ja moved closer to Hyun-ju's body. Gently, she reached for your arm, prying your grip away. You didn't resist, you couldn't.
You limps fell numb, hollow. As if your soul has been drained through your tears. You let go.
Geum-ja leaned over him, her hand, trembling slightly as she reached over for the chains around his neck, she pulled the keys free, holding them tightly in her fist.
"Come on," Geum-ja said softly. "Hyun-ju said he found the exit. It shouldn't be far."
She reached down and helped you to your feet, steadying you as you wavered. Then, without a word, she walked over to jun-hee and gently took the baby from her arms.
Jun-hee nodded faintly, her eyes red and swollen. But she didn't resist. Geum-ja cradled the newborn close, her expression set with quiet determination.
