The warning came in the dead of night.
An explosion near the harbor. The Tower's alarms howled, casting crimson light through every hallway. Raven's voice crackled over the comms, sharp and urgent.
"Ra's is here. It's him."
The team gathered without hesitation. Kory suited up in streaks of orange light, Gar shifting into his wolf form before reverting, tense. Jaime's Scarab hummed with anticipation. Even Dick's hands trembled slightly as he slid his mask into place.
But it was Damian's face that told the real story.
No cocky remarks. No sharp insults. Just a cold, grim focus in his storm-green eyes.
They met on the old bridge leading to the city's edge. The storm clouds hung low, the scent of rain thick in the air. And standing beneath the broken arch of ancient stone, as if he belonged to the night itself, was Ra's al Ghul.
He was unchanged. Ageless. His pale eyes gleamed with quiet triumph, a cruel smile curling at the edges of his lips.
And in his hands — an artifact. Old. Wrong. A relic of rusted metal and bone, etched with ancient markings that made Mars's stomach twist on sight.
"You should have returned to your place, child," Ra's called out, his voice carrying through the storm.
Mars felt her shadows ripple, something deep inside her buckling.
"Stay behind me," Damian growled, stepping forward, sword in hand.
But Ra's raised the artifact high. The runes flared to life, and a pulse of ancient power rippled outward. The world tilted.
Mars screamed.
It felt like invisible hooks latching onto her mind, tearing through every defense she'd built. Her vision blurred, the storm dimmed, and a voice older than memory slithered through her consciousness.
"Obey."
The moment the artifact's pulse hit, Mars's body jerked — like a marionette on unseen strings.
Her shadows convulsed around her, writhing like a living storm, and for a second her pupils flared to pure obsidian.
"Mars?!" Gar shouted, stepping forward — but it was too late.
Her hands snapped up and a wave of shadow shot toward them, forcing the team to scatter. The ground cracked where it struck, hissing with cold darkness.
"She's not in control!" Raven called out, raising a barrier just in time as another blast slammed into them.
Mars's face twisted into something unrecognizable — her expression empty, eyes dark and glassy. Like the girl they knew had vanished, and something older and hungrier wore her skin.
Ra's stood still, the artifact humming in his hand, his voice a quiet command.
"Destroy them."
Mars moved without hesitation.
Kory shot forward first, streaks of solar energy flaring around her fists. "Mars, fight it! It's not you!"
A blade of condensed shadow intercepted her midair, sending her crashing through a pillar of old stone with a pained cry.
Gar shifted into a tiger, lunging — but Mars's tendrils snatched him mid-leap, slamming him into the bridge with bone-rattling force.
