Darkness pulsed behind her eyes.
Marceline stood barefoot on cracked concrete, her breath shallow, the world around her stained with blood and smoke. Chains wound around her wrists, heavy and cold, biting through skin. The walls dripped shadows, and somewhere in the distance, someone laughed...low, cruel, and all too familiar.
“You thought you were safe,” the voice whispered, echoing like broken glass. “You thought they wouldn’t find you.”
Figures blurred in the flickering light...all, faceless, their presence suffocating. One stepped closer, raising a hand that bled darkness. She struggled, but the chains held tight.
“We took your parents. What makes you think we won’t take you next?”
Marceline opened her mouth to scream.
But the shadows beat her to it.

She shot upright in bed, gasping.
Sweat clung to her back, the sheets tangled around her legs like vines. Her room in Titans Tower... small, clean, quiet...felt miles away from the memory she’d just escaped. Moonlight streamed in from the tall windows, painting her floor in silver and ghostlight. Her chest heaved. Her hands trembled.
The shadows on her walls shifted restlessly. She took a breath and tried to push them down.
Too late.
The door slammed open, and two blurs rushed in...one in blue, the other glowing like a sunrise.
“Mars!” Dick’s voice was sharp, trained, but edged with concern. He crossed the room in seconds, crouching beside her bed. “Talk to me. What happened?”
Kory floated just behind him, eyes glowing faintly, her hand already reaching out, warm and steady. “Another nightmare?”
Marceline nodded slowly. “Same one. Again.”
Kory sat on the edge of her bed without hesitation, brushing a strand of black hair from Marceline’s face like an older sister might. “You are safe now,” she said gently. “You are not alone here.”
“I know,” Mars muttered, her voice rough. “Doesn’t make it stop.”
Dick glanced at the walls, noticing the shadows still clinging to the corners, reacting to her unease. He didn’t flinch...he never did... but his voice dropped lower. “Your control’s slipping. Are you okay to rein it in?”
“Yeah.” She exhaled, slowly closing her hands into fists. The shadows twitched, then pulled back, obedient again. “I’ve got it.”
Kory’s smile was soft. “We believe you. And you do not have to carry this weight alone.”
Marceline looked at them both—the glowing alien warrior with a heart like a hearth - and the boy who used to wear the Robin symbol but smiled like he wanted to be more than what Gotham made him. Her family now, whether she’d asked for one or not.
Dick stood, rubbing the back of his neck. “Well. You might wanna get some rest while you still can.”
Mars raised an eyebrow. “Why?”
He smirked. “New recruit shows up in the morning.”
Her stomach dipped. “Another kid?”
“Technically... yeah. He’s thirteen.” Dick gave her a look that was half warning, half amusement. “Name’s Damian Wayne.”
Marceline blinked. “Wayne? As in...”
“As in that Wayne,” Kory confirmed, standing and stretching her arms. “He is the son of the Batman.”
Mars sank back against her pillow, staring at the ceiling. “Great. Another brooding boy with issues.”
Dick chuckled. “Try all the issues. Just... go easy on him, alright?”
She rolled her eyes. “I’ll try if he does.”
But as the door clicked shut behind them, and her room returned to silence, Marceline couldn’t help the flicker of curiosity twisting in her chest. She didn’t like new people. Didn’t trust them.
But something told her... this one might be different.
And she wasn’t sure if that was good or bad yet.
