THE air was thick with cigarette smoke and expensive cologne, a stifling mix that made my stomach turn. It was a scent I had never forgotten—one that clung to power, to control, to the past I had fought so hard to escape.

Now, I sat across from the man who had once held my world in his hands, only to shatter it beyond repair. The man who had shaped me into something I no longer recognized. My father hadn't changed. Not really. But time had worn him down. He looked older, the lines on his face deeper, his presence somehow heavier. Not from guilt—he had never been burdened by that—but by excess. Too much indulgence. Too much taking and never giving.

He took a slow drag from his cigarette, exhaling smoke in lazy curls, his gaze settling on me with the same detached amusement he had always worn. As if I were an object he had once discarded, now unexpectedly useful again.

"Look at you," he murmured, tapping ash into a crystal tray. "All grown up. And still so... defiant."

I didn't respond. My fingers curled into fists beneath the polished mahogany table. The weight of the restaurant felt suffocating—too many expensive suits, too many secrets exchanged between hushed conversations. And yet, I felt like a child again. Small. Powerless.

"I didn't come here for small talk," I said, my voice sharper than what I felt. "You said you had a deal."

My father smiled, or should I say, the man in front of me smiled. It wasn't warm. It never had been.

"Your mother," he said, leaning forward, his voice drenched in faux sympathy. "She doesn't have much time left, does she?"

My blood ran cold. I went silent.

I kept my face blank, but inside, the storm raged. I had spent my entire life preparing for this moment—the moment I would stand before him and feel nothing. No fear. No pain. No anger. And yet, here I am, drowning.

"What do you want?" I was forced out.

"Not much," he said smoothly, taking another slow drag of his cigarette. "Just a simple arrangement. Marry the son of a very powerful man. Secure the future of this company. Be a good little girl, and in return-" he flicked his lighter once, twice, before snapping it shut, "-I'll make sure your mother gets the best treatment money can buy."

A chill crawled up my spine.

He was lying. He was always lying.

And yet, I knew I had no choice. My mother was all I had left.

I looked at my father, at the devil draped in wealth and cruelty, and realized something:

I would take his deal. I have no choice but to.

But one day, I would destroy him for it.
