"You must be Kai," he said, his voice warm and inviting. "Your big sister was here to celebrate your birthday, wasn't she?"

Kai nodded hesitantly, his fingers tightening around Brook's wrist.

"I bet she's a wonderful sister," Afton continued, his tone dripping with false sincerity. "We'll find her. I promise."

John stepped forward, placing himself between Kai and Afton. "Don't make promises you can't keep," he said, his voice low and cold.

Afton stood, his smile never faltering. "Of course. I'll leave you to it. But if you need anything, I'm here to help."

As Afton walked away, Brook grabbed John's arm, her voice a hiss. "Did you see the way he looked at Kai?"

John nodded, his face dark. "I don't trust him."

Kai tugged on Brook's sleeve, his voice a whisper. "Mommy, I'm scared."

Brook pulled him into a hug, her eyes darting toward the police officers and then back to the retreating figure of William Afton. The weight of her fear settled heavily in her chest.

Somehow, amidst all the chaos, Afton's reassurance had only made her feel worse. Brook sat on a bench near the entrance, her hands trembling as she held onto Kai's. John stood nearby, his eyes scanning the room like he could will Y/n to reappear.

Kai tugged on Brook's sleeve again, his voice breaking through her thoughts.
"Mommy... I think it's my fault," he whispered, his head bowed in shame.

Brook's heart clenched. "Oh, honey, no," she said softly, her voice cracking. She cupped his face and leaned closer. "It's not your fault. Why would you think that?"

John knelt beside them, his hand resting firmly on Kai's shoulder. "It's okay, buddy," he said gently. "You can talk to us."

Kai's lip quivered as tears welled in his eyes. He didn't want to say it, but the guilt gnawed at him. Deep down, he was sure it was his fault.

"I just... I just wanted her to like me," he admitted, his voice trembling.

Brook frowned, exchanging a worried glance with John. "Of course, she likes you. Why would you think she doesn't?"

Kai's small hands twisted the fabric of his shirt, his gaze fixed on the floor. "She's always mad at me. She doesn't want to be around me. I thought... if I could make her happy, she'd change her mind."

His words hit Brook like a gut punch. She blinked back tears and tightened her hold on his hands.

Kai continued, his voice barely above a whisper. "That's why I picked Freddy's for my birthday. It's my favorite place, and all my friends like it too. I thought maybe if she saw how cool it was, she'd smile at me."

Brook's chest ached as she listened. "Oh, sweetheart," she murmured, her voice thick with emotion.

"I even picked her favorite cake," Kai said, his voice cracking. "I wanted to show her I can be thoughtful. But she didn't seem happy when we got here. She looked mad." His breath hitched as he struggled to keep talking. "So I left her alone... because that's what always makes her happier. I thought maybe if I stayed out of her way, she'd feel better."

Brook brushed his hair back gently. "Oh, Kai, it's not your job to make her happy. You didn't do anything wrong," she assured him, but her words didn't seem to reach him.

Kai's body trembled as fresh tears rolled down his cheeks. "Then the bunny..." His voice trailed off, his head shaking.

Brook and John froze.
