A Birthday to Die For

Long chapter ahead!

Y/n's car rattled to a stop in the cracked parking lot of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. She put it in park and stared through the windshield at the building ahead.

It wasn't much to look at. The red-brick structure was squat and rectangular, with a neon sign depicting Freddy Fazbear's grinning face above the entrance. One of Freddy's eyes was dimmer than the other, and the sign flickered every few seconds, buzzing faintly. Beneath it, faded letters announced: "Where Fantasy and Fun Come to Life!"

Y/n grimaced. "More like where childhood dreams go to die," she muttered, resting her hands on the steering wheel.

Next to her, Kai was practically vibrating with excitement in the back seat. "We're here! We're here!" he squealed, pressing his hands against the glass.

Y/n glanced at him, her lips pressing into a thin line. "Yeah, I can see that. Calm down before you break something."

But Kai was already fumbling with his seatbelt, his small hands moving too fast to be effective. "Come on, Y/n! Let's go!"

Y/n sighed, leaning back in her seat as she let her gaze drift over the parking lot. The cracks in the asphalt were filled with weeds, and a few old soda cans rolled lazily in the breeze. There was a small crowd of cars scattered around, most of them looking as beat-up as hers. A mom herded two young kids toward the front entrance, the little ones bouncing in excitement.

Her eyes returned to the building, and something cold settled in her chest. There was nothing overtly wrong with the place—it was just an old pizza joint—but it felt... off. Like it was trying too hard to be cheerful, masking something darker beneath the surface.

Why does Kai love this place so much?

"Y/n, come on!" Kai whined, tugging at her sleeve.

She sighed again, finally unbuckling her seatbelt. "All right, all right. Let's get this over with."

She grabbed the party supplies from the passenger seat while Kai dashed ahead, his sneakers slapping against the pavement. The plastic bags weighed heavily in her hands as she trudged after him, her eyes narrowing against the harsh sunlight reflecting off the glass doors.

By the time she reached the entrance, Kai was already holding it open for her. "Hurry up!" he urged, hopping from foot to foot.

"I'm going as fast as I can," she snapped, brushing past him.

The jingling bell above the door announced their arrival, and Y/n was hit by a wave of sensory overload the moment she stepped inside.

Bright, clashing colors assaulted her eyes—yellow walls plastered with faded posters, red-and-blue streamers drooping from the ceiling, and balloons - guess mom didn't need to pack those - in every color imaginable tied to tables and chairs. The smell of pizza and cheap plastic was overwhelming, thick enough to make her nose wrinkle. The checkered strip lining every wall imaginable shouting that it's an old timey pizzeria needing to be put out of its misery.

Every inch of wall space between the faded posters were kid's drawings. All an amalgamation of crayon, marker, glue, glitter glue, and all manners of crafts. Every paper depicting the mascots and stick figures with party hats on.

"Wow!" Kai gasped, darting ahead with wide eyes. He spun in a circle, taking in the scene like it was the most magical place on Earth. "This is so cool!"

Y/n trailed behind, her arms full of the party supplies she'd grudgingly agreed to carry. She felt completely out of place, standing there in her hoodie and jeans while arcade machines beeped and whirred in the background. Children squealed and laughed, their voices merging into an endless cacophony that made her temples throb.
