This place is a nightmare, she thought, glaring at the animatronics on the main stage.
There they were: Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie the Bunny, and Chica the Chicken, standing stiffly behind their microphones with unnatural grins plastered on their faces. Their fur was faded and patchy in places, and their glassy eyes seemed to follow her as she moved. A shiver crawled down her spine.
"Come on, Y/n!" Kai called, bouncing on his heels near the party tables. "Over here!"
With a sigh, Y/n trudged over and dumped the supplies onto one of the tables. She straightened, cracking her neck as she surveyed the area. The tablecloths were bright purple, decorated with stars and pictures of the animatronics' smiling faces. A few families were scattered around, some eating pizza while others played games or watched the stage. Off in the corner was what looked to be a smaller stage closed off by a purple curtain and sign stating out of order.
Kai was already pulling chairs away from the table, setting up as though he owned the place. "Do you think Freddy will come to the party? Or Bonnie? Bonnie's my favorite!"
Y/n raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms. "Pretty sure they're just robots, Kai. They're not gonna walk over here and sing 'Happy Birthday.'"
Kai gave her a look, his little face scrunched in defiance. "You don't know that! I saw a video where Freddy came to someone's table and danced."
"Uh-huh." She wasn't buying it, but she didn't have the energy to argue.
"Excuse me," a chipper voice interrupted.
Y/n turned to see a teenage employee in a red-and-yellow uniform standing nearby, clutching a clipboard. Her nametag read "Melissa."
"You must be the Baker party," Melissa said, smiling brightly. "You're here early, which is great! That gives us time to get everything ready before the show starts. Let me grab your tokens and wristbands!"
Kai practically vibrated with excitement as Melissa handed him a paper cup filled with game tokens. He grabbed it with both hands like it was a treasure chest.
"Thanks!" he said, already eyeing the arcade machines.
Melissa smiled at Y/n. "If you need anything, just let one of us know, okay?"
"Yeah, sure," Y/n replied, not bothering to hide her disinterest.
Melissa left, and Y/n dropped into one of the chairs with a groan. She watched as Kai raced toward the arcade, his laughter echoing across the room. For a moment, she thought about calling him back—telling him to stay close—but she stopped herself.
Let him have his fun, she thought, resting her chin in her hand. The sooner this party's over, the sooner I can go home.
The faint hum of the animatronics' speakers caught her attention, drawing her gaze back to the stage. Freddy and his friends loomed in the spotlight, their unmoving forms casting long shadows across the floor.
Y/n's stomach churned as she stared into Freddy's eyes. There was something unsettling about the way he seemed to be looking right at her, his permanent grin frozen in place.
She shook her head, forcing herself to look away. "Get a grip," she muttered under her breath.
But the feeling didn't leave.
Y/n watched Kai slip a token into an arcade machine, his small hands gripping the controls tightly. His body jerked with every movement, fully immersed in the pixilated game on the screen. She glanced at the bag of party supplies she'd set on the table.
Melissa had said they could help with the setup. Nah. There's not much anyway, and John would just call me lazy for not doing it myself—that asshole.
