"Am I wrong?"

It goes quiet for a moment, so quiet that looked at my phone to see if we were still connected.

"Uh... hello-?"

"You're insufferable."

Ah, there she is.

I laugh harder, lying back down on the bed, and staring at the ceiling as I listening to breathing on the other end.
That's the funny thing about knowing someone better than you knew yourself.
Even though she wasn't here, I can perfectly picture how she looked just based on the small noises coming through the speaker- a smile that she confined into a tight lipped expression as to not blow her cover, and if she really were here, how my arm would sting after the half-assed punch she threw in my direction.

I sat back up, rolling the sheets between my fingers, "I know, but seriously... are you though?"

"Am I what?"

"Are you doing okay?"
I hesitated asking. Maybe, it's not my place anymore.

She sighs, and as sad as it sounds, it felt comforting to hear.

"I mean... I haven't tried walking yet, but I think I can manage."

My eyes go wide, "You're fucking with me."

She giggles into the phone, and a cheeky smirk I'm sure plastered itself onto her face.

"Only partially."

Ellie stirred beside me, flipping onto her stomach, and draped her arm across my front.

"Who was that? Baby mama?"

Her eyes weren't even open, but a faint smile could be seen.

"You've got to stop calling her that."

She chuckled, her morning voice deep enough that I could feel the vibrations through the sheets, and her grip on me tightened, "Then you shouldn't have told me about that hamster you two got together."

"Oh my god, Ellie-" I sighed, tempted to surrender to her wit, "-for the 20th time... we had it for 2 weeks before it died. We just wanted to give it a comfortable end."

She hums, still refusing to open her eyes.
"What did she want anyway this early in the morning?"

I place my hand onto of Ellie's head, tracing fingers through her hair, "Donna texted her, asking if I was okay... pretty sure shes trying to catch me in a lie."

"Seems like they know each other pretty well to be texting Abby about your whereabouts."

As odd as it sounded, a doctor in her mid-late 20s and a 50 something year old strip club owner being tight-knit like that, even I was shocked how well they hit it off.

"They're like... besties. They work out together and stuff."

Ellie hums again, this time more dismissive. Was she annoyed that Abby had called? Jealous?

She sat up, and a part of me feared what I've always known her to do when she got mildly pissed about something, but instead, she stays.

Ellie rested her head on her hand, laying on her side to face me, "You're terrible for teasing her like that by the way."

"What do you mean-?"

She smirked, air quoting the air, and repeats "I haven't tried walking yet."

I squint at her, my jaw slightly agape, "You sneaky little-"

A variety of insults came to mind, none of them being actual insults.
