It was Saturday. A whole week has gone by since Ellie had been stabbed, and she's doing pretty good all things considered.
Honestly, it sucks. Not the part about her recovering, but I'm running out of excuses to be around, be near her... I guess I got too comfortable, and being at work, a place where I should be... I don't know... doing my job, but my mind was elsewhere.
I wanted to get back to her, both Ellie and Abby. I talk to Abby everyday, couple of times on the phone, and we text whenever she can, but of course it isn't the same.
"Sky!"
My head lifted, looking in the direction I heard my name being called, my hands shuffling the stage collecting bills.
"I got someone for you." Donna says, her eyebrow arched, and a smirk on her lips.
I was confused for a second, thinking she was fucking with me, but when she stepped aside, my face lit up.
I jumped from the stage, money still balled in my fists as I ran, well... Ran is a strong word, more like scuffled across the room, my arms opened wide.
"Oh my god-" I sighed giddily, wrapping my arms around her wide torso.
Abby laughed, returning a tight squeeze before peeling me off of her by a hand on my shoulder.
"Easy now."
I fought hard with myself to not immediately suction myself back to her hip, but I know she's already feeling awkward being here.
Even though all the girls loved her, and went out of their way to make her feel welcome, it was never her style.
"What are you doing here?"
I watched her as she kept her head low and only looked up briefly to exchange hellos to some of the girls passing by that had noticed her presence.
"I uh-" She chuckled, hands searching for her back pockets, "-I was just wondering how things are going. Ellie still doing okay?"
Is this really about her health? Or is this just an excuse for Abby to try to get a better read on me, about whether or not I had let Ellie snake her way back in.
"You really think I'd be here if she wasn't?"
I smiled at her, my hands starting to sweat from the money I was holding, but maybe something else too.
"Right, right..."
She shifted on her feet, avoiding eye contact, which is really unlike her, and why the hell isn't she saying anything?
She used to come by quite often in the beginning, always worried I wasn't eating enough to keep up with the alcohol I'd drown myself in, but clearly, that isn't the case now.
"Why are you really here?" I asked, my smile dropping, and with that, hers did too.
She stops, and by stop, it's like she froze, eyes to the floor before looking at me, "I was worried about El."
El? Interesting.
"And what else?"
If this were a shitty movie and I was some shitty actress, I'd be tapping my foot right about now, my arms crossed, impatiently waiting for an explanation as to why my deadbeat husband was coming home so late in the evening, Abby being the deadbeat in question.
My eyebrow raises at her, and her stoned expression cracks, the corner of her lip tugging up, "Okay, fine. You got me. God forbid I missed you and just wanted to see you."
I felt myself start to smile, and just as quickly as it started to grow, I stopped it.
"Awe." I exaggerated a pity sigh, wrinkled bills over my heart, "Are you that lost without me?"
