Ellie
The rest of our stay in my hometown flew by. It honestly didn't feel real. A conjuration of all my wildest dreams conjoined.
I'll always remember what Joel said when we got back to the house after the proposal, "Let me be the first to congratulate you two."
I've never seen that man so happy. So relieved....
It's like he finally believed that I'd be okay without him.
He wouldn't be wrong to think that.
We slept in the morning after returning home. It was perfect, the half-asleep, half-awake state just holding each other and occasionally mumbling about how we needed to get up for real this time, but neither of us budged.
Finally, we were awake, but still lazily tangled together in bed.
"How have you always pictured your wedding day?" I asked her, and her head lifts from my chest.
"Huh?"
"You know like what does your dress look like, the kind of venue, and all that."
She puts her head back down, humming in a short thought.
"Back then, I always wanted to do traditional stuff. A big, expensive dress with a long veil, an arch of flowers above our heads when we say I do."
I felt a but coming, but it never did.
"Maybe we should elope."

I feel Ellie shrug beneath my cheek.
"We could."
I looked up, invited by a smirk. Does she really mean that?
"Really?"
"Why not. Where do you want to go?"
I thought for a second, all the possibilities- The humid subtropicals of Florida, the dense forests of the Appalachian mountains.
"California."
Ellie hummed, a hum I didn't know how to take. What if she wanted a proper wedding, have Joel there, and Dina and Jesse? It's not all about me.
"Sounds good to me."
I jumped up, bracing my hand on her chest, "Really?"
She shrugged, "I've never been there. I'd like to see it."
"When would we go?"
Ellie thinks for a moment, "In a couple of weeks after the court date."
My eyes grew wide.
"That soon?"
Ellie sat up, and reached for my hands, "It doesn't have to be if you don't want. Absolutely no pressure." She smiled at me, but it was a nervous one, as if she was worried by her honest response.
I thought for a moment, I mean, why wait?
"Okay."

Yesterday was a well deserved lazy day for us, but reality has struck once again. We were back into our usual work week schedule. Ellie left the house well before I got up, but I always vaguely remember her kissing me on the head before she left. I never bring it up to her though, something about the fact she does it thinking I don't notice makes it more special.
"I told you, you had nothing to worry about." Abby says, stabbing her salad from across the table.
I met up with her during her break since we both had some catching up to do, plus the cafe down the road from the hospital just happens to make the best coffee.
