The night after James and Lily died Sirius went to their house for a Halloween party. when he got there he was distraught as he found 2 of his best friends dead in front of their young child.
He went searching he Wormtail who he knew to be the cause Of Voldemort finding them when he found Voldemort himself (the curse did not destroy his body when it rebounded.)
Out of rage he threw every spell he could at Voldemort, not succeeding in doing any damage until he figured out the ultimate insult to Voldemort. To fight like a muggle. So Sirius suddenly roundhouse kicked Voldemort in the face causing his nose to be permanently squished. It also caused Voldemort's current body brain damage which resulted in the death of that body and the start of his quest to regain his body and power all because Sirius kicked him in the face.
