He was a crank far far past gone so he cut it off to try to find a better one. For years he roamed the world looking for the perfect nose until he found a baby by the name of Harry Potter.
This baby, in Voldemort's views, had the perfect nose so he tried to take it. He tried asking nicely to trying to kill Harry but it never worked. He even tried to take over the wizarding world for it.
Unfortunately even after all his tries Voldemort never was successful and died on his quest for the perfect nose.
