Chapter Nineteen

"What are you gonna ask of her?" He didn't like the accusatory edge of her voice, even if it was seeped in worry, and he gripped the staff across his lap tightly as he directed his words at (Y/n).

"Null Sector is in need of a mechanic and you are in need of protection. Your family will be safe with the B4RK unit and my Nulltroopers, so I expect you to accept my gracious offer this time so what you went through tonight will not happen again."

Papa stood abruptly, knocking his chair back. "Now wait a cotton pickin' minute-"

(Y/n) piped up quickly. "It's okay, Pops."

"We won't let you go with him," Mama cried, shaking her head vehemently. "He murdered countless people in Rio and Toronto!"

"Yet when I try to save your meaningless lives, you resist," Ramattra grumbled.

(Y/n)'s head whipped to him. "Ramattra!"

"I ain't sure what your plan is but it sure as hell ain't involving my daughter!" Papa slammed his fist down on the table, making (Y/n) jump.

Ramattra stood slowly, staring down at the older man as he met the omnic's gaze sternly. "Your daughter harbors secrets that could lead to the extinction of my people, human. If I were not so adamant on keeping her alive, I would have killed you and her long ago." The nanites on his staff swirled around the orb, sounding like they were charging up to be shot, and (Y/n) quickly held up her hands to try to break the staredown.

"This ain't helping noone!"

"What have you been keeping from us?" Mama's voice was near silent, but it seemed like the loudest thing in the room as suddenly all eyes were on (Y/n).

"I, um..." She shifted in her seat, glancing up at Ramattra for help.

"If you tell them, I will kill them." Her jaw dropped as Mama gasped and Papa started shouting. "Be grateful you do not know," Ramattra cut them off with a chilling glare. "For you are not hunted as your daughter is." Then his piercing gaze landed on the girl. "Will you join me or not?"

Mama's voice couldn't be quieter or more desperate. "Shug, don't you dare."

"He's a terrorist, sugar lump!" Pops roared, leaning partially over the table with hands fisted on the tablecloth.

(Y/n)'s voice was nothing more than a whisper. "You're darn sure my family will be safe?" Ramattra dipped his head, patiently waiting for the answer he knew was coming as she turned to her parents. "Then I reckon I have no choice. They'll just keep coming 'round until they get me, they'll kill y'all, and I just...I can't do that to you."

"You can't trust him." Mama reached across the table to take (Y/n)'s hands in hers.

"But I can't watch you die because of me." Tears filled the pair's eyes, and Mama pulled her around the table and into a hug.

Ramattra watched them before Papa huffed, crossing his arms. "Ravagers ain't known for no hospitality."

"Then you should have good reason to believe me when I tell you no harm will come to you or your daughter while I am around." The omnic leveled his gaze on the man, and he let out a short bark of a laugh.

"I s'pose so, but you best keep your word." It was painfully obvious the man was trying to be cordial for the sake of his daughter even as the hard edge to his voice only got sharper.

Ramattra almost respected the human for working so hard to protect (Y/n) despite how misguided he was. "I do not fill the air with lies as your kind does, and I would not be putting forth all this effort only to kill her."
