"England to win against Paraguay, 1-0."

When Jiang Wang returned to the sports betting station, there were still three or four people who had been there drinking tea and playing cards in the morning.

Someone recognized him and waved familiarly, "Brother, care to join us for a game?"

"No thanks," the man emptied the remaining change from his pocket, pushing it all towards the old man without counting, "Put it all on England."

"Teng bo, with bets like this, you still complain about business being slow," chuckled the uncle sitting by the fan as he lit a cigarette, "When the World Cup comes around, not only us lot but even some new faces come to watch the games here."

This time, Teng bo was much quicker in collecting the money, but he couldn't help but glance up at Jiang Wang while feeding the bills into the money counter.

This young man had a military background. Sharp-eyed with a touch of aloofness.

"From the provincial capital?" asked the stranger beside Jiang Wang, handing him a cigarette.

"It doesn't matter," Jiang Wang replied nonchalantly.

The man passing the cigarette had heard about Jiang Wang's winning bet earlier in the day, and now he too was betting on England, eagerly awaiting the outcome.

June and July were the hottest months, and the small shop had a large ceiling fan spinning slowly overhead. The smaller fans blowing directly on them only made them sweat even more, and the card players seemed noticeably less enthusiastic.

In small towns like this, everyone knew each other. Whether it was a family feud over torn green onions or a girl marrying out of the province, it all became fodder for gossip among the townsfolk, providing some new jokes for neighbors and relatives to enjoy.

Jiang Wang glanced at their prying eyes, took a puff of his cigarette, and sat down beside the card table.

"I don't know much else," he said slowly. "But I've learned a thing or two about fortune-telling from a master in a Taoist temple. Fifty - one divinations, not much to ask for. If it's not accurate, I'll pay ten times."

He needed rent money. In a small town, houses were cheap, and he could gather enough before sunset for a somewhat decent two-bedroom apartment, costing just a few hundred a month.

As soon as he mentioned this, several people in the shop became visibly interested.

"Fifty is too expensive?" a middle-aged man with an oily face pretended to be offended. "Going up West Mountain to the temple to draw lots only costs twenty."

Jiang Wang glanced at the black-and-white screen and didn't respond.

"This guy made an accurate guess this morning and is leaving now," a skinny guy joked. "I just won a few hundred. Come on, let's play a round."

He pushed a hundred directly in front of Jiang Wang and even flicked it with his finger.

"One false guess, ten times the pay, as you said."

Jiang Wang looked at the money without taking it and said calmly, "Your surname is Shen, isn't it?"

The man, looking like a skinny monkey, was stunned and couldn't find the right words.
