okay i wanted to talk an actually good book because fireys reign was a slog to get through

reputation:

alight is one of the most read fireafy books, currently sitting second in the fireafy tag. it follows the plot of a humanised leafy and firey navigating their feelings towards each other. even with it being one of the more popular bfdi books, ive barely seen anyone talk about other than leafcake, it seems like people gloss over this thinking its just another fireafy story from the pandemic trying to cope with bfb 15 however its so much more than that.

my actual review ( spoilers)

alight is beautifully written, it near perfectly sets up the world (take notes fireys reign). its honestly so refreshing to see an actually good written book and it being fanfiction. like no joke the author could actually be a real writer publishing actual real books and i wouldnt be suprised.

both leafy and firey are extremely fleshed out which is very impressive considering its small length compared to other books. its amazing how the author can make both characters feel like actual people.

and thats not just for firey and leafy. the side characters in this while not being as fleshed out as firey and leafy, still have motivations, they all feel like real people i could meet.

be it, firey not being to read or pen having to work a million jobs to pay off his debt, this book pays great omege to the source materiel.

The way the author is able to describe the backgrounds shows their talent and i cannot complain at all.

okay but i have some problems with the book dont worry

while i just said that firey and leafy are both extremely fleshed out, firey is honestly an asshole in this, i dont want to root for him to get back with leafy. and thats a problem in the book, while i get we needed firey to go down a downwards spiral, it felt it was a bit too exaggerated.

maybe this is a problem with the pacing, but especially in chapter seven, firey goes from a drunk asshole to an actual abuser like what?

another problem i have with fireys character is that he doesnt face any consequences  for his actions , and yes i know he does in the sequel but a book should be able to stand on its own even without a sequel. speaking of the ending

i dont like the ending of this book, its probably its weakest part.

for context before the three ending chapters, firey comes to leafy after he gets dumped by needle, leafy lets him sleep in the bathtub once firey awakes, leafy tells him to fuck off because she just got her life back and hes just a fragment of her past, firey cries because of this.

the ending chapters seem a bit too rushed and somewhat out of left field, i swear after leafy gives her speech about her not needing firey, the next chapter is just her wanting firey back like excuse me hypocritical much?

and maybe its to show that leafy is weaker than she thought and that she needs someone to rely on and not just her cat, but at that point just get therapy. for some odd reason firey goes back and realizes he loves her which i thought he realized before but whatever and goes back to her place.

firey manages to somewhat weirdly get into leafys house by saying they are both broken and need each other but like as far as firey knows leafy hates his guts, so i don't understand the logic there. firey runs to her door before needle calls him and the chapter ends.

next chapter is just needle telling firey she was right and to go get leafy, which excuse me? needle you nearly got raped by this man and borderline assaulted and your rooting for him? maybe im the only one who sees this as kinda contrived so firey can have that happy ending with needle, but cmoon the man didnt EVEN SAY SORRY

anyways leafy lets firey in happy ending bla bla, but if you havent noticed the last three chapters have been pretty short, which is probably why it felt rushed. i honestly wouldnt have minded the chapters being shorter but have just more of them yknow.

TL;DR:

with all this being said, i still think alight is defintley above average and maybe even more compared to other books, and while im not basing this ranking off the other books, i still feel that should be mentioned.

even with a subpar ending, i will still rate this book a strong 7 to light 8 i tried my best to not be biased in this review, since this was one of the first books i've ever read on here.

anyways sorry for this being shorter than firey's reign. i couldnt really say much, its just beautifully written.
