35: Alive and Okay are Very Different Things

Start from the beginning

The redhead's voice immediately caught Y/n's attention. "Billy, you don't have to do this. Billy. Your name is Billy. Billy Hargrove. You live on 4819 Cherry Lane. Billy, please, I'm Max, I'm your sis-"

Max was cut off by Billy hitting her directly across the face, and Y/n became absolutely livid.

She grabbed the knife from her pocket and didn't hesitate to rush to Billy and give him a clean slash on his upper arm. The teenage boy clutched his arm for a moment before the emotionless expression turned to an expression of rage, and he grabbed the girl's knife from her hand, before throwing it across the room, just missing Mike's leg as he moved.

Y/n swung to punch him, but he grabbed her fist, and shoved her into the wall. Her head hit the hard surface before she fell to the ground. She coughed up blood, her fuzzy vision going black after Billy kicked her in the stomach.

!!!

"

Y/n?" Max's voice echoed to Y/n as the redhead continued to call her name, shaking her awake. "Y/n, please, wake up," the girl pleaded.

Y/n's head was pounding, and there was a knot in her stomach, like there was an anvil resting on it. She couldn't breathe... Amazingly, but she could breathe.

"Max?" The girl slurred, forcing her heavy eyelids to open.

"Hey, Y/n," Max breathed, relieved. "Hey. Are you okay?"

Y/n nodded as she sat up, leaning against the wall until she could support herself as Max woke up Mike.

"Where's El?" The boy asked once he was awake. The three ran to the man area of the mall, only to find the monster, standing in the middle of the mall with Billy and Eleven in front of it, as their friends threw fireworks at the monster.

Billy stood up from hovering over El, and turned to the monster. It confused everyone there. What was he doing?

One of its tentacles came straight towards El, but Billy stopped it, putting his arms out to get attacked by the creature instead.

Y/n looked to Max, whose eyes welled with tears as she watched her step-brother.

Tentacles stabbed into Billy's sides, until he dropped to his knees, yelling.

One final tentacle dove straight into Billy's chest.

"Billy!" Max screamed. The scream broke Y/n's heart. She had never heard the redhead's voice be so full of pain.

The monster started convulsing, and losing it balance. It crashed into the balconies and walls before falling to the ground.

It was dead.

Max slowly made her way over to Billy. She dropped to the ground before she pleaded for Billy to wake up.

"Billy, get up. Billy, please."

"I'm sorry," the boy said, his voice raspy before he let out one finally breath.

Max sobbed before falling into Y/n, who wrapped her arms around Max as she cried into her.

"I'm sorry, Max. It's okay, it'll be okay. I'm so sorry," Y/n whispered to the girl, stroking her hair as she held her tight.

They sat like that for a while, until they heard sirens outside. The monster had melted, barely leaving a trace. Y/n brought Max to her feet and led the redhead outside.

Y/n sat in the back of an ambulance with Max, her arm around the Mayfield's shoulders and a blanket around the both of them as they waited for their parents.

Y/n saw her mom, and kissed the top of Max's head before speaking softly. "I'll be right back, okay?"

Max nodded, and Y/n hopped off of the back of the truck before running to her mom.

"Mom!" She smiled, immediately hugging the woman. She hugged back, relieved that her daughter was okay.

Well, she was alive. Maybe not okay.

"Oh, my goodness, honey, I was so worried," her mom told her, a tear rolling down her cheek. Y/n pulled away, smiling. "I'm okay, mom."

"Are you sure?" Her mom asked, cupping her daughter's face, turning it to see all of the cuts and bruises. "What happened?"

Y/n took a breath. "So, you remember how I told you about everything that happened last year, right?"

Her mom nodded.

"It came back. But we stopped it," Y/n explained, adding the last four words quickly, so her mom didn't panic. Her mom just hugged her again. "I'm so sorry you have to go through all of this, honey."

"It's okay, I'm okay."

When her mom pulled away again, she glanced to Max for a moment, who was already watching with a smile.

"How are you and Max?"

"Oh, we're good. We're... We're really good," Y/n said. "She's... she's my girlfriend, now."

Her mom smiled and hugged her again. "Mom, you're gonna suffocate me!" Y/n laughed before her mom pulled away again. "Okay, go say goodbye to your girlfriend, we're going home."

"Wait, can I stay with her? Until she leaves, please? I don't want her to be alone."

Her mom thought about it for a moment before nodding. Y/n started to walk off before turning back to her mom.

"Do you wanna... Come with?"

Her mom didn't say anything, she just followed Y/n, who spoke again as they walked. "She just lost her step-brother," she told her mom. "Her brother, the monster killed him."

Her mom's face turned to one of sympathy and sorrow, and when they reached Max, she hugged the girl. "I'm so sorry, sweetie," Y/n's mom comforted the redhead, giving her a much-needed hug that only a mother could give.

"We'll always be here for you, okay?" Y/n's mom told Max after she pulled away. Max nodded, her eyes glassed over.

"Stay with her," Y/n's mom told her quietly as she got up, putting the blanket over the girls. "She needs you."

Y/n nodded, and Max leaned into her as Y/n's mom walked away.

"I told her," Y/n spoke up. "Is that okay?"

Max nodded.

"And Robin and Steve," she added.

Max chuckled a bit and nodded again.

Y/n chuckled as well, glad she made the girl smile a bit. "Okay."
