Scripture reference:

"Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight."
‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭3‬:‭3‬-‭4‬ ‭NIV‬‬

When I was a little girl,
I was insecure about my curls
All because they're not loose like some of my classmates who are mixed girls
Age 14, I got a texture softener
Age 15, a hairdresser got scissor happy and cut my hair short
Age 16 I got a relaxer
And that's the same age I wore weave braids
Age 20 I decided to go natural
My hair started growing slowly but I was still grateful
Same age I decided to appreciate my tight curls
At the end of the day, no matter what I do to my hair,
Some fellas are still gonna ask for my number 😆
Age 25 my hair grew back long
And the moment I got a natural silk press,
I couldn't help but show my long hair off
But anytime that happens, I often heard others tell me that my hair looks better in curls

But tell me if I do my hair a certain way according to your preferences,
Would that make me a better person?
Would you consider me a better friend or partner
If I do my hair a certain way according to preferences?
I'm 100% sure that what I do to my hair doesn't define me as a person.
I looked at myself in the mirror, and saw this:

Hey, I am not my hair.
I am not this skin.
I am not your expectations, no,
I am not my hair.
I am not this skin.
I am a soul that lives within
I am a soul that lives within
I am not my hair.
I am not this skin.
I am a soul that lives within.

"I am not my hair" by India.Arie is the song this poem is inspired by.
