In the 1950s, Jesse, a smart-aleck 10-year-old boy from New York, visits his grandparents and cousins in the south for the summer. Jesse thinks he is smarter than the country folks because he comes from the big city, but his grandma won't tolerate his attitude and his words often land him in trouble.

Jesse was sitting on the porch with his grandpa and cousins. His grandpa was drinking his favorite hooch, Jesse noticed something was wrong with the old man. He asked his cousin Ronald what was going on, and Ronald said, "He's probably drunk. Why don't you go and ask him?" Jesse walked up to his grandpa and asked him, "Grandpa, are you drunk?" His elderly grandpa slapped his face hard, barking at him, "Boy, don't you ever ask me that again, you hear me? Next time I'll pull down your bridges and tan your backside in front of everyone, now git!" Jesse ran from him in tears, while his cousins laughed at him. His grandma saw him crying and asked another cousin, Janet, what happened. Janet told her, "He asked grandpa if he was drunk and grandpa slapped him." His grandma said, "He deserved it. He should know his place as a child.
