The Gods, headed by Indra went to Brahmalok and pleaded Brahma to find a way to kill Mahishasur. Brahma sighed.

"Devraj, I can understand your problem but I, myself, have given him the boon that no one can ever kill him. I am helpless in this situation. We should meet Vishnu and Shiva. Only they can help us now."

Saying so, Brahma and the other Gods went to Kailash. There they saw that Shiva and Vishnu were engaged in a deep conversation.

"Pranam Devadidev. Pranam Sri Hari!" greeted Indra. Shiva and Vishnu nodded.

"Welcome to Kailash, Devgan. It's a pleasant surprise to see all of you here along with Brahma Dev. What is the matter?" Shiva asked.

"Hey Shambhu, by my boon, Mahishasur has become invincible. He has taken over the heaven and is now plundering Earth. He is torturing the Rishis, men and women. He has stopped the worship of Gods and has declared himself to be the supreme. I am bound by my words so I cannot do anything. That is why we are here to seek your help" Brahma said.

Hearing Mahishasur's evil deeds, the two dieties became angry. The fair face of Shiva became red with fury and Vishnu's eyes became wide with rage.

"But how is it possible, Tridev? Mahishasur cannot be killed by any man. Who will defeat him?" Indra asked. Now Vishnu smiled.

"Indra, Brahma's boon was that no man can kill him but a woman can."

"A woman? But who is so powerful enough to kill such a powerful demon like Mahishasur?" said Varun.

"You are forgetting Varun Dev, the mulashakti of this universe is a woman herself. Only Devi Adi Parashakti can help us now. She is currently residing as Rishi Katayan's daughter. We have to evoke her."

"You are right, Narayan. It is time that Shakti awakens once more. Come here, Devgan. We will all pray to the Goddess" Shiva said.

Following their suggestion, the dieties, including the Trinity, joined their hands and started singing hymns to the Supreme Goddess.

.................

Katyayani was busy collecting flowers for her father's daily worship when she could hear the Gods calling out to her. She was startled for a moment and then closed her eyes. Through her divine vision, she saw the Gods praying to her. She also saw the atrocities that Mahishasur has been committing. She realised it was time for her to complete what she intended to.

As Rishi Katayan was preparing for his daily worship, he was suddenly blinded by a glow of light that appeared before him. As he blinked away his initial blankness, he saw amongst the light emerged a four armed Goddess. It was his daughter. Her upper left hand had and lower left hand had a lotus and a sword respectively and both right hands were in the 'vara mudra'. The Goddess was riding a lion and was adorned with precious jewellery. Seeing such a divine vision, Katayan fell to his knees. The Goddess smiled.

"Hey Rishi Katayan, I am honored to have been your daughter. I'm grateful for the love and care you have given as my father. That is why, this form of mine will be known as your daughter, Katayani. But today, I have to go. The reason for which I had taken birth as your daughter was to end the reign of the evil Mahishasur. Kindly let me go now."

Katayan was in tears by then. He joined his hands and said, "Oh mother, I am extremely fortune that I could have been your father. I will not stop you from doing your duty. You are jagat janani. It is enough for me that I could have your presence in my house. May you have victory!"

Goddess Katayani smiled and disappeared.
