A wave of pain

Now I understand what they mean
With "a flood of memory crashed over them"
When they first look at someone again.

But it doesn't come immediately
Like in the stories, in books.
It comes afterwards,
And they're right with the "crash".

The memories quite literally crash in,
Overpowering anything else,
And you can't stop them.
Like a relentless and unforgiving tsunami.

You try to ignore them
But you can't for long.
Believe me, I've tried.
