The scent of coming rain sits heavy in the air, yet a droplet hasn't fallen to speckle the windshield. It's a nice night, with a cool breeze blowing on the late-summer wind, rustling the many well-kept trees that line the cobbled walkway leading to a set of oak doors. The architecture of the red-bricked commercial buildings surrounding the giant steeple-roofed playhouse holds a familiarity that still to this day gives Reid's heart a flutter of warmth, but beneath it, a corroding feeling of dread churns his stomach.

"Okay. We showed up," Reid says as he slouches down further in the leather passenger seat. "Let's go home."

Through the windshield, the sight of the pompous, well-dressed dignitaries that linger in the parking lot and walkway and slowly file into the playhouse is making him want to vomit.

"Reid," Kenneth sighs and takes the key from the ignition. "Gabriel's expecting us."

There's shifting from the backseat. Reid doesn't have to look to know Hannah's leaning between the front seats because the gentle smell of cinnamon grows stronger. "Screw all these assholes. We'll face them together. Yeah?"

Reid shifts in his seat to look at her sharply. He doesn't miss the smile that Kenneth's trying to hide by looking out the driver's window.

Then, he simply stares at her pretty face, the freckles on her nose lightened with makeup. Her brown hair atop her head, some curls escape, hiding her earrings, which he knows are bats because she showed him quite happily. Reid debates demanding she go home. Hannah's under the radar, unknown to the underworld. If she walks into that playhouse tonight, that'll never be true again. But he doesn't even try, because there's a fire behind her dark gaze that he's seen ablaze in Kenneth's green eyes many times. Reid knows there's no telling either of them what to do once they've made up their minds.
