( CHAPTER FORTY-THREE: SMOKE & MIRRORS )
September, 1993

❝ all this is just smoke and mirrors, emmet.❞

Janet thought that she had heard him wrong. She thought that perhaps... her ears was failing her. A child? Did he really ask her if she had a child? Janet stared into Devon's face, waiting for him to crack a smile. To shoot out some pathetic joke, claiming that he was only kidding. But alas, the moment never came. Devon's face remained the same. He didn't smile, and it made Janet even more concerned.

"W-What?" The pop star couldn't help but utter out, still stunned by Devon's question. She watched as her boyfriend's face tensed, and the image of his kind brown eyes hardening with disdain was a terrible sight to see.

"You heard me," Devon repeated, his voice firmer this time. He didn't bother repeating himself, because he knew that Janet had heard what he said. He didn't need to clarify, he only needed the truth. And he wanted it, desperately.

"You're serious?" Janet couldn't help but repeat, still stunned that Devon was being for real.

"Very," the dancer said, still holding eye contact with her, "Now answer me."

What am I supposed to say? Janet thought to herself, her mouth gaping open with shock. It was completely unexpected to hear such a question. When she came out here, she expected for Devon to tell her about a bad day, or a terrible event that may have soured his mood. But, to hear him ask her this— it was simply baffling. But alas, she needed to answer, or else Devon's mind will run wild.

"No, I don't have a kid!" Janet finally said, and the confusion in her tone was evident, "Where is this coming from?" She stood up, unable to take the stress of this conversation. It might've made her look more guilty, but truly, Janet didn't know what to make of this. Sure, she had her secrets— but accusing her of this? It was insane.

"Are you telling the truth?" Devon asked, standing up along with her.

Janet looked at him in confusion, wondering why the hell he was so suspicious of her. This morning, he seemed fine. What changed? "Of course," Janet said, and her voice was firm and steady. But Janet could see that Devon was not yet convinced.

She expected to see rage from him, but no, she saw a different kind of torture swarming in his eyes. He wanted to believe her, he wanted to trust her word, but something was holding him back. "Hilary told me that you're hiding a child from me, a child you had with Rene," Devon explained, and that alone made Janet's heart drop. Hilary. She truly was doing everything in her power to ruin her relationship with Devon, it felt like a different type of malice. "I didn't want to believe her, but this morning, when I answered your phone, it was Rene, and he was demanding money from you."
