For the next four days Achilles and I spent everyday with each other, we would go to movies, parks, the beach, and his house when his mother was out working or running an errand. He asked me once if I wanted him to come to my house and I said no because things were tense at home due to my parents divorce.

Which wasn’t a complete lie things were definitely different and sometimes it felt like I could cut the tense with a pair of children's scissors but if Achilles came to my house he probably wouldn’t understand the tense.

When I told him “things are tense” he properly thought about yelling, screaming, crying, throwing, things a couple divorcing may do.

But not my parents

My dad who was usually loud, rude, and opinionated was now a shell of the man who I grew up with. When I was growing up dad was almost never home in the morning or afternoons, sometimes even at night if work needed him.

Now here he was wearing the same shirt and sweatpants he’s been wearing for almost a week with no signs of changing. At first seeing dad like this scared me, then that turned to worry, and it became petty about how pathetic his father had become, but now he didn’t feel anything when looking at him.

“Are you gonna be here for dinner?” Mom asked as she toasted dad’s bread to make his favorite sandwich

“Yes” I told her, as I watched her make dad’s sandwich,Mom loved cooking and she made sure she took her time

She took dad warm toasted bread and added turkey, ham, mustder, mayo, pickle slices, and a sprinkle of pepper as she closed the sandwich and cut it into a triangle. She then grabbed a small bowl and added potato chips, she gently placed the bowl on the plate next to his sandwich and grabbed dad a beer and handed him his lunch.

Dad grunted instead of saying thank you but mom didn’t care and walked back to the kitchen to me.

“Are you hungry? I can make you a sandwich” Mom asked me while washing her hands

Before I could answer the door knocked and mom walked over to open it

“Patroclus it’s your friend” Mom called and I felt my heart drop

I walked behind mom and saw Achilles standing outside, his hair was in a short ponytail and had a tank top with jeans. The look did not go together but of course he looked breathtaking as always.

“Hi” I said to him feeling goosebumps all over my body

“Hey” Achilles greeted me back shooting me a smile that made my legs feel jelly

“It’s so nice to see you again, come in” Mom said and he walked in

“Are you hungry dear? I can make you both lunch-”Mom then stopped her train of thought with a loud over exaggerated gasped

“I can make you both Patroclus favorite sandwich” Mom said excited

“No” I immediately said embarrassed but Achilles beat me to it

“Yes, I would love to see it” Achilles agreed then mom walked into the kitchen and turn on the stove

When mom was gone Achilles looked at me and leaned in to kiss me, before our lips met I put two fingers on his lips and gently pushed him away.

He looked confused and I glanced my head to my dad who was only a few feet away from us

“Oh” Achilles said, that when I realized he didn’t noticed him

“Is that your dad?” Achilles asked sounding shocked

“Yeah” I said in a tone that even I didn’t completely understand

Was I disappointed? That couldn’t be, even when dad was making good money and respected I was never proud of my dad

Was I embarrassed? That seems more accurate but he still wasn’t sure

Dad glanced at me and Achilles, I was worried he would revert to his old self. He hated unexpected guests unless it was one of his co-workers or managers. He yelled, became uncomfortable, cold, and even kicked them out.

Not his time, he just glanced at me then at Achilles then turned his attention back to his sandwich and the TV.

“Lunch” Mom screamed and we walked into the kitchen together, I looked back at Dad one last time expecting something.

An judgmental remark

An rude comment

A reminder of the man I spend my whole life being afraid of

But nothing, Dad never even looked back to me
