Chapter 18: Roles in Responsibility.

{Valerie}

"Valerie.." A booming voice echoes around me in surround sound, the noise coming from nowhere yet everywhere at the same time.

"You've been gone far too long, now it's time to sow the consequences." I'm underwhelmed after taking in my surroundings, knowing there was nothing outstanding to help me figure out more about my situation. The moment I rise to my feet I'm yanked back to the ground, a long silver chain clamped around my ankle.

That wasn't the weirdest part, where the silver touched my skin.. it was burning.

I look around hopelessly as the sizzling of my skin echoes in my ears, searing pain I'd never felt before coursing through my body. Tapping my hands against the concrete wall I growl out in frustration, then begin to yank at the chain ignoring the burn.

"You can't escape Valerie, soon you'll wish you were dead!"

I'm startled awake by the feminine voice, sitting upright to grip my chest as I look around the guest bedroom. No one here, Greyson hadn't even snuck into my bedroom last night. Once the pounding of my heartbeat isn't noticeable in my ears, I groan out loud throw myself back into bed.

When would the nightmares stop? I couldn't sleep peacefully anymore unless Greyson was in the same bed, it was exhausting.

Without a word I numbly ready myself for the day until I'm eventually perched on the kitchen island stools downstairs, waiting for the kitchen staff to finish preparing breakfast.

Normally I would've loved to help cook, but I have a massive headache today. Maybe from the lack of sleep, I'm not sure, but I felt increasingly aggravated as the pain went on.

"Good morning, gorgeous, how'd you sleep?" My head turns just in time for Greyson to press a soft kiss to the top my head, while rubbing my shoulders tentatively as I sink into his fingers.

"I slept good." I lie, exercising the new skill Sophe had taught me by placing my mind block up. I didn't know why I was having these nightmares, and I wasn't sure if I was ready to talk about it with anyone yet. Especially Greyson.

"Oh, good morning Alpha.. Luna." A kitchen staff member that had previously been in the pantry take notice of Greyson, and me soon after. Sending back a kind smile while Greyson mutters a good morning of his own. I still hadn't gotten used to the foreign title, but tried my best to be accepting of the formality. We still had to discuss the specifics of my role in the pack, but that was for another day.

If Greyson noticed my mind block was up he didn't show it, only placing a loving kiss to my hand that spread warmth throughout my body as he stands.

"We have an important day tomorrow," He's stopped as a cook silently slides our dishes in front of us. Plates filled to the brim with crepes, hash browns, sausage and bacon on the side, as well as a tall pitcher of orange juice. My mouth nearly watered at the sight but was short lived as Greyson halts them in their tracks.

"Take the Luna and I's plates and place them in my office. We have a lot to discuss."

"Yes, Alpha." The older woman sends a warm smile and just like that she's off, while Greyson guides me to stand to my feet.

"Come." My heart flutters at the command, but nonetheless I follow as my mind trails off somewhere else. Since the night I'd snuck into Greyson's room with the intention of leaving, we hadn't talked about what happened between us that night. I didn't regret it in the slightest, but I found myself waking up on lonely nights in cold sweats, my body aching for his touch, for more.

He pushed open the door to his office allowing me to walk in first, our trays of food already sitting on opposite sides of his desk. I didn't waste a moment running after my plate to eat, only causing him to laugh softly.

"There's Tylenol next to the orange juice, it's been so long since I felt a headache I almost didn't realize why my head was splitting this morning. I had the kitchen buy some pain killers to keep in my cabinet for days you might need them, we didn't have that stuff in the pack house before." He sits in the large seat across from me, watching intently as I finish chewing my crepe and swallowing.

"Y-You could feel my headaches?" I inquire, looking to the Tylenol next to my cup and immediately take it.

"It's from the bond. I'm an Alpha so it's more intense, normally I wouldn't be able to feel your pain so intensely unless you were marked and fully mated." At the last few words he takes in my figure appreciatively, his eyes momentarily falling below my eyes until he averts his attention making my heart sputter.

"So, I have an important meeting tomorrow with neighboring packs. They'll each come with their Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Luna if they have one." He begins to situate himself in his seat across from me, pulling his plate closer and cutting a piece of his food, at the same time I push mine away to focus.

"I'd love for you to attend as my mate." He takes a bite of his food at the same time I blanch, nerves suddenly twisting my stomach in knots as I plow over his words.

Be there as his mate? Therefore his Luna? I don't know if I was ready, I still had so much to learn and was barely adjusting to my life as it was without the heavy role of Luna on my shoulders.

As if sensing my thoughts, "I'd be there the entire time. If you're worried about saying the right thing and presenting yourself a certain way, don't. I'll guide you the whole way through, and if it becomes too much you can always leave." His words soothed me further once he grabbed my hand, lovingly tracing pattern onto my skin with his thumbs.

"What's the meeting for?"

"Since it'll be neighboring Alpha's, just about threats nearby our territory and how to better protect our people. Very laid back and a great way to introduce you, as the attention won't solely be on you." I'll give it to him, he knew how to make me comfortable.

Waves of reassurance shifted from his body to mine, and while I still held certain worries, I nodded knowing as long as he was there I'd be okay.
