Chapter 3

We sat on my bed, not uttering a single word. There was complete silence, and it was very uncomfortable. I just stared at the ground, not being to look up in fear of meeting his eyes.

His beautiful eyes.

No Annabelle, snap out of it.

Nick cleared his throat, the sound filling

the recently silent room.

"So how come your brother has a British accent, and you don't?"

I gave him a slight smile. "I was wondering when you would ask that."

"Well...?"

I sighed. "We're not actually related. We're just really close, so we consider each other family."

He looked slightly confused, but all he said was, "Oh." He looked out of window, and said, "So where are your parents?"

I stiffened. I thought we had already crossed this bridge. "Out."

He rolled his eyes. "Well obviously, but will they get mad if they come home and see me here?"

"Oh, you don't have to worry about that. You'll be home long before they cover home."

He looked at me sympathetically. "I'm assuming they work really late?"

I let out a single, stiff laugh. "You could say that."

Once again, he looked confused. He opened up his mouth to say something else, but then closed it, apparently deciding against saying whatever he had in mind. For the second time today, an uncomfortable silence settled over us.

"You're actually not that bad."

I snapped my head up. "What?"

Nick laughed. "When I first met you, I honestly thought you were a bitch, but after actually getting to know, I've changed my mind."

I scoffed. "That's complete crap. We've known eachother for about two hours. You don't know me at all."

"You've told me some stuff."

I have him a look. "That's barely anything. You really don't know me at all."

"Then let me get to know you."

I laughed.

His face fell. "What...?'

I continued to laugh, trying to catch my breath. "That was the lamest attempt at flirting I have ever heard."

"Yeah... I guess I've never been that good at that sort of thing." He grinned. "But seriously, I really want to get to know you better."

I laughed again, but this time is wasn't genuine. It was a rude, sarcastic laugh. "How about no."

He frowned. "Why not?"

"I don't need anybody else in my life. I don't want anybody else." I looked at the ground and whispered, "I just want everyone to leave me alone."

I expected him to be hurt. I expected him to finally realize that I just wanted to be alone.

I did not expect him to hug me.

The tight embrace took me completely by surprise, and let me tell you, I loved it. However, I could never let him know that. "What exactly do you think you're doing?"

"Hugging you."

I sighed. "I can see that. Now would you please get off of me."

"Nope."

I was seriously getting fed up with this dude. Who does he think he is? I pushed him off of me, stood up, and walked over to my door. "Get out."

Now he looked hurt. "But... Why..."

I closed my eyes, and with a unsteady voice replied, "Just do it."

He had a hard look on his face. How he looked angry. However, his face quickly softened. "Anna..."

I cut him off. "Don't call me that." I gave my head a sad shake. "Just please leave, ok? It was a mistake to even have brought you here in the first place; I don't know what I was thinking. Just leave and forget about me. Trust me, it won't be hard. Besides, it would be best for both of us."

Nicks face turned hard again, but this time it was unreadable. "Fine." He walked out my door, gave me one last glance, and continued through the hallway and down the stairs.

I closed my eyes, my breathing still hard and unsteady. As I collapsed on my bed, I heard the sound of the front door slam and the sound of footsteps rushing up to my room.

"What the hell was that about?"

I groaned into my pillow. "Go away Evan."

"Not until you tell me what that was about."

I groaned again, this time sitting up. "Nick left."

He rolled his eyes. "Yeah, I could tell. What I'm wondering is why he left."

"He couldn't handle my complete awesomeness." I grinned at the look on his face.

He laughed. "Sorry, but that's kind of hard to believe." He gave me a playfully evil smile. "Besides, you're nothing compared to me."

"Whatever tickles your pickle."

Now it was his turn to groan. "Stop saying that! It sounds so ... dirty."

I smiled. "Yeah, whatever."

He laughed again as he walked over to my bed and sat down next to me. "But seriously, what happened? It looked like you were actually getting along with him."

"You sound surprised."

He gave me a pointed glare. "Anna, you know as well I do what you're like."

I grumbled a bunch of nonsense in response, not really knowing what to say. "Just give me a minute to think, ok?"

He sighed. "Anna..."

"Evan, please? I just need to figure some things out. Once I have, I promise to come talk to you."

This reassured him. "Fine." He gave me a crooked smile and exited my room.

I loved Evan. In a brotherly way, of course. He was the only person I could really talk to. He listened, never judged, and always gave the best advice. Even though we technically weren't related, he was my family.

My only family.

The funny thing was, we actually look like we could be related. We both had the same curly brown hair, even though I dyed it black and straightened it every day. We had the same piercing blue eyes. His were only slightly brighter than mine were. We had the same round face, and the same long eyelashes. The only

thing that really set us apart was our height. I was extremely short, and he

was a towering giant. I came up to just below his shoulders.

The point is, we're family, and I want to tell him about nick, I'm just not really sure how.

"Oh, hey Evan, you know that dude Nick? Well he's really pissing me off by flirting with me and trying to get me to tell him things about my screwed up life, but for some reason I'm strangely attracted to him and I feel the urge to eat his face off whenever I look at him, so I'm being rude to him in hopes that he'll hate me forever and leave me alone."

Yeah, no. Not happening. I groaned and sat back down on my bed, my head in my hands.

This is why don't associate with people.

It just causes drama.
