"You double scoop?" Stefani looked at him.

"Dude, I dry scoop- duh," chase pulled out a small tub of whatever.

The powder was so fine, the moment the lid came off, pink dust formed a mushroom cloud over the lid in the lighting.

With a tiny scooper, Chase takes a serving of the powder and plops it into his mouth to chug an entire water bottle within seconds.

"That has got to be the most irrational thing apart from Gwen today-

My dad chokes behind his coffee mug as mom raises her eyebrows and Cheryl's mouth drops with a partial smile.

"You don't know anything about this?" He slid the tub over to Stefani as she examined the powder.

"Dry scooping? No. But I do know this, the workout I'm about to have? I might as well say Gwen killed me in my sleep," she shrugged and popped a serving in her mouth as well.

Chase was laughing at the remark as Stefani's face scrunches from whatever was in that powder and she chugged her water bottle until it was completely empty as well.

She gasped for air and almost coughed as Chase gave her a strong pat on the back making her eyes pop out of her head.

"Damn," my dad nudged his head and continued to sip his coffee.

"She has a sense of dark humor," Cheryl covered her mouth the best she could.

"We'll be back before the rest of the family gets here!" Chase waves off.

"I'm taking Gwen shopping when we get back, hope you don't mind. We started off on the wrong foot," Stefani simply just leaves.

My parents are both baffled just as my sister, shit, I'm just as confused too. She was just giving her a piece of her mind moments ago..

"Stefani, be sure to text me here and there so I know you're okay," I called.

"You're not my mom and can never be, so back off," her tone lashed at me and I almost flinched.

"Lord-

"God almighty," my dad whistled and looked down into his empty mug.

"I'd say show her who's boss but- damn sis, she might actually beat your ass," Cheryl snickered and she gets pinched by mom again.

"Oh it's been beaten alright," I shrugged and my dad choked on air- fuck, not like- well, yes like that- but, fuck.

"Lillian, that child actually hit you?" He sat his mug down.

I m-mean, no? But it was fun when she did...

"N-no. When I first moved in, I didn't realize how strong of a connection she had with her biological mother until her remarks came out at me. She found me a disgrace to even consider myself being a suitable mother figure in her life compared to her actual mother. They made video diaries together, cooked together- Stefani's mom has this saying where 'low heat is the best', they also took so many silly photos. She has the originals in her personal belongings because Kent tried to get rid of them so they could move on with life- I pretty much figured she's never gotten over the death of her mother," I explained and brought tears to my mom's eyes.

"Sometimes I wish I was dead so my kids would love me that much," she sniffled.

"Mom, don't talk like that!" I rushed over to wipe her tears.

"Careful now, you're already old. Talking like that is practically manifesting," my sister commented and I glared at her.

"So not helping," I retorted and there's my dad trying to keep his composure together to keep from laughing.

"Who knew mommy issues can make a person look lethal," my sister shrugged.

"I knew she was lethal the moment I saw her," my dad nudged Cheryl and I rolled my eyes.

"She's actually sweet. She's just well reserved, sarcastic and doesn't sugar coat anything," I defended Stefani.

"Sis, if looks could kill? She's guilty as charged," my sister over dramatically waves her arms.

"I'm telling you, Gwen might not make it by dawn," my dad shook his head and shrugged.

"Both of you stop it, she's thought provoking and sends chills down everyone's spines whenever she speaks- I'm very aware. But she's only troubled when it comes to family related things considering hers was once whole and has been broken even since! She blames herself for her mother's death too you know. And probably why she doesn't want another mom so she doesn't have to risk losing another valuable person in her life- Now both of you, cut her some slack, she's not used to being in a functioning household- goddamnit I've been away from one for so long, I forgot how to function!" i whisper yelled at them both.

My mom casually sets her tea cup down in its little plate, "I knew I liked her," she softly smiles.

"Wait, what?" I grew confused.

How can she like someone she doesn't even understand- i hardly understand stefani myself; some days more than other but today? Shes been unpredictable.

"I want her and her father to help me cook when they finish their sight seeing," my mom walked off to unlatch the glass door to go sit in the rocking chair and enjoy the snow gently falling as she sips on her tea.

"Don't you always help her with the cooking every Christmas- holiday? Like- I'm general?" My sister was beyond baffled.

"Hell if I knew, Kent's upstairs sleeping his rich ass off as if he'd be broke by tomorrow," my dad pours another cup.

"Dad if only you knew..." I shook my head and chuckled.

"Knew what?" He arched his brow.

"He can actually be broke before dinner if Stefani chooses so," I happily sipped my coffee with the constant nagging thought of trying to understand Stefani's behavior today.
