Chapter 28- A dance with a prince

Start from the beginning

He was right; it was not my typical behaviour. However, I was not one to admit that a child had a better understanding of my personality than I had thought previously. "I am not that bad of a friend. Of course, I would ask for such. Besides, I have grown since the last we saw each other. It is just a reflection of my mature personality."

He laughed, and I had the urge to kick him. "Indeed, you have grown Lulu. Though not more than me." he came closer to my ear and whispered. "I am still taller."

Obviously, I stepped on his foot.

He gasped, yet he never lost that cheeky smile of his. When I tried for another stomp, for good measure, he swirled me around, causing surprised looks from the other couples and spectators. From afar, I heard a scream of desperation from Gobbie and an exasperation grunt from Lady Di'Mello.

"To be honest, I was anxious about you and your sister."mentioned Cedric when he finished the unplanned spin. "I had heard you went to live off with a hermit."

Hermit? Emmanuel?

I wanted to laugh at such a description of him, but something told me I had to defend the honour of the man who saved me. Damn you, conscience...

"He is a priest and a royal tutor. As far as I know, he taught Emperor Salazar." Cedric snorted loudly, and I couldn't avoid a twitch on my lips, while I bent my head to his side. "Like Lady Di'Mello."

"Father never told me about him. Though if I am honest, he only mentioned professor Sousa because I asked." he said.

Oh, yes, professor Sousa. The notorious tutor was the nightmare of the royal princes. Prince Francis, especially, couldn't handle him. He pushed them to their limits and was the most rigorous of all the tutors they had. Thankfully, for his students, he hated social gatherings of any sort and refused any invitation from his peers or nobles. Except if they came from the Sun Emperor.

"I must ask him, next time I see him..." continued Cedric, more to himself than to me at that moment. I didn't mind and let him on his thoughts, enjoying the dance instead. Until I felt his eyes burn on my neck.

"So, you liked my present? Mother said it was the best way to show appreciation!" excitement hinted in his voice.

I glanced back at the necklace that sparkled with its uncharacteristic light and stayed with my eyes fixed there for a while, wondering if I should be honest. Though it was pretty and I was wearing it, I still felt it to be too much. And better to say it now than later when more of these popped out.

I gulped while preparing my case. Honesty was good, but so was appreciation. Something a grown-up, like me, should start on with a future Moon Emperor, whose nickname was to become the scarlet darkness.

"I appreciate it. It's beautiful... but... maybe something less bloody would be good too."

His eyebrows quirked and his mouth thinned. He followed with a sorrowful sigh.

"Francis did say it was a little too much for you... I should have guessed it... Mother is not very good with the Sun Empire's customs."

Or with common sense...

I watched as his face morphed into a lost, sad expression, making me troubled with guilt.

"It is pretty..." I tried with a comforting smile.

His eyes gleamed in response, and then... he laughed. Louder than ever.

Again, tricked by a troublemaker... Damn you!!

He continued to laugh as I punched him on the shoulder for his lie. Slightly, so it wouldn't cause alarm on the guests, though I noticed some curious glances from Wolff and a foxy prince.

To my enjoyment, the music stopped. Still vexed with Cedric, however, I thought of retribution until an idea came to me while we both bowed. I grasped his fingers with extra strength, making his attention focused on me again.

"But don't be sad, your highness." I said with a mocking grin, straightening my back. "I have good news to fill your heart. Due to my laborious studies in alchemy, I managed a feat of great wonder. I fabricated an alchemy gun."

His mouth opened and his eyes gouged out. Yet I didn't stick around to see him recover. Instead, I left his hand and went to find Gobbie, the only person who wouldn't allow Cedric to push me aside for a talk or a dance (not after we had one already). He wouldn't get the answers he wanted tonight, and it would wreck him all evening!

That is what you get for making fun of me!

My triumph was short-lived, however, when I felt a small touch on my shoulder. It surprised me; I hadn't thought Cedric would have bounced back so fast. I tried to find where that idiot Gobbie was to make my escape. But when a cough came and I sensed all eyes in the room on me, I knew it was too late to escape. I then turned, resigned, only to be greeted not by scarlet, but by a golden pair of eyes and a foxy smile.

Prince Francis stood there, his arm stretched, expecting me to take his hand, and accepted his silent request for the next dance...

Oh, shit...

A little late but what counts is that we have it (I hope XD)
