(Twice, in Pat's Case)

Volume 2: The Sea of Monsters

The next few days were torture, just like Tantalus wanted. After Tyson moved into cabin three, the campers comments were relentless.

"He's not my real brother!" Percy protested whenever Tyson wasn't around. "He's more like a half-brother on the monstrous side of the family. Like . . . a half-brother twice removed, or something." Nobody bought it.

Annabeth had teamed with Percy for the chariot races, and Pallas quickly tried to convince them to let him join. My archery skills, he'd emphasize, I can— He didn't have to try very hard. Annabeth let him join quickly.

One morning, Pallas, Annabeth and Percy were sitting by the canoe lake sketching chariot designs when some jokers from Aphrodite's cabin walked by and asked Percy if he needed to borrow some eyeliner for my eye... "Oh sorry, eyes."

As they walked away laughing, Pallas scoffed, "I do not know how Pat is related to them." That was a de facto lie; Pat often acted like a son of Aphrodite would be expected to act. But unlike those campers, Pat was never one to jest cruelly. Unless it was about Annabeth's crush on Luke, which Pallas hoped had passed out of her system with the flush of betrayal.

Annabeth grumbled, "Just ignore them, Percy. It isn't your fault you have a monster for a brother."

"He's not my brother!" Percy snapped. "And he's not a monster, either!"

Annabeth raised her eyebrows. "Hey, don't get mad at me! And technically, he is a monster."

"Well you gave him permission to enter the camp." Percy reminded her.

"Because it was the only way to save your life!" She was fueled at first, but the fire died out quickly. After a second, she said, "I mean . . . I'm sorry, Percy, I didn't expect Poseidon to claim him. Cyclopes are the most deceitful, treacherous—"

"He is not!" Percy defended, "What have you got against Cyclopes, anyway?"

Annabeth's ears turned pink. Pallas knew Annabeth enough to know when she hid things, but he had adjusted to Pat's secrecy enough to appreciate discretion. When she said, "Just forget it," Pallas did. Percy didn't though.

"You're treating him like he's this horrible thing," He said. "He saved my life."

Annabeth threw down her pencil and stood. "Then maybe you should design a chariot with him."

"Maybe I should."

"Fine!"

"Fine!"

She stormed off. With a sigh, Pallas pushed himself up, "Percy," He started, but Percy waved him off miserably.

Pallas continued teaming up with Annabeth over the next couple of days. He stopped by the stables to watch Pat laugh at Percy riding a pegasus, though he bit his lip when Tyson got upset that he couldn't ride. It was hard for Pallas to tell how Pat felt about Tyson. He wasn't anywhere near Annabeth's levels of hatred, but he certainly wasn't as welcoming as he was when new demigods appeared at camp.

About a week into camp, Pat eventually approached the Poseidon cable at dinner and handed a blue bracelet to Tyson. Pallas couldn't hear what they said, but Tyson hugged Pat tight enough that he thought Pat's bones popped.
