Q1. How did you come up with the title for your book?

A1. A habit of mine is that I like to name my stories after songs or albums. I was listening to one of my favorite albums, M2M's Shades of Purple, while planning out my plot. I then came up with the idea of centering my story around a specific color. And since yellow is such a brilliant color with millions of shades and meanings, both positive and negative, I chose yellow. (PS: what a nice thought tho...)👏

Q2. What part of the book was the most fun to write?

A2. Perhaps the part which takes place three years after the K-drama True Beauty ended. From then on, I didn't have to rely on what had been provided for me and I could develop the characters the way I wanted. Moreover, the readers had no idea what the situations were going to be like, so I had a lot of fun trying to surprise them.(PS: nice)🤩

Q3. What do you think is the best way to improve writing skills?

A3. Reading! By reading books written by a variety of authors, you'll be introduced to a lot of rich topics and mini plots, which can really help make your writing more diverse. You can also discover different ways of portraying characters, structuring sentences, and describing scenarios.

Q4. What is a significant way your book has changed since the first draft?

A4. Initially, each chapter title was based on the events that occur in that specific chapter. But then I had the idea of changing the chapter names into various shades of yellow, to really embody the title of my book. In addition, the most meaningful and significant chapter in my book is specially titled 'colors'. I won't say anything more about it—you'll need to read my book to understand the significance behind this decision!(PS: *chef's kiss*)😭

Q5. Do you play music while you write — and, if so, what's your favorite?

A5. Absolutely! Music is everything to me. Out of the many playlists I've created, I have two that I listened to the most while writing Shades of Yellow. One playlist features OSTs from K-dramas, and the other is made up of songs that make me feel like I'm in a romance K-drama. Both really helped me get into the appropriate mindset of writing a slow-burn set in picturesque South Korea. The song I really think perfectly illustrates the mood of my book, and that I listened to on repeat while writing, is Beautiful by K.Will. (PS: OST's are everything for me!)❤

Q6. Does writing energize or exhaust you? Or both?

A6. It really depends on whether I have writer's block or not, as it is a problem I struggle with a lot. When I am working on a spark of an idea, I can write for hours on end. When I have writer's block but really want to write, it is exhausting to even come up with a paragraph.

Q7. What risks have you taken with your writing that have paid off?

A7. Making Yeonwoo's character very multi-dimensional. She has so many layers to her personality, from being dreamy or reckless, to motivated or self-destructive. I was worried I wouldn't be able to keep track of her personality, but as I wrote more of my book, I began to realize that that's how most people are. We don't always have a single personality we lean on, and the one we take up depends on our company. Around Seojun, Yeonwoo was open and affectionate. With Sujin, and just like her, Yeonwoo was cynical and blunt. These little nuances make her feel like such a real person, which is exactly what I had been aiming for.

Q8. Would you share something about yourself that your readers don't know (yet)?

A8. I am currently studying neuroscience for my undergraduate studies. I am fascinated by the human body, and I hope that in the future, I can juggle a job in the sciences as well as writing.(PS: woah..)😶

Q9. How do you process and deal with negative book reviews?

A9. So far, I haven't gotten any negative book reviews, but I am aware that it will happen eventually! When it does happen, I'll do my best to read it as constructive criticism, even if it comes across as rude. I'm always hoping to improve my writing skills, and what's more helpful than the truth?

Q10. What advice would you give to a writer working on their first book?

A10. Rather than copy a writing style you admire, experiment until you develop one that feels comfortable and comes easily to you. Draft out the development of your characters well and look at the bigger picture of your story first instead of focusing on the smaller details—you'll have time to iron them out later. Don't feel pressured to write because it will only hinder your creativity. Write when you want to, and if you don't want to, it's completely alright! Treat writing as an art, not a chore.
