September 16. Lord Brissame High School.

High school.

A marginally higher level of education. The last stage one must complete before pursing post-secondary options.

I am sixteen. Not typically the age that one goes into their senior year. I am also a week or so late to start attending. I'm not worried about being behind in my courses- I'd be a month ahead if I'd been able to continue my homeschooling, rather than being relegated to this unappealing secondary situation. I'm not particularly pleased to be attending classes alongside teenagers who are two years older than me, but who are most likely two years below my intellect. I'm not boasting- it's just the truth. I'd much rather teach myself the curriculum at my own pace, than be delayed by students who likely aren't even paying attention, much less intending on pursuing higher education.

But. I'm still here. In front of a physical building declaring itself as a HIGH SCHOOL rather brashly via the rusted white lettering across the street-facing brick wall.

"Ready?"

I look up at my half brother, Thaniel. One of the more tolerable people in my life. He's gone to this school since grade nine. His attendance here most definitely made it easier for my (rather intolerable) father to choose not to order my textbooks and register me for my homeschooling courses, instead sending me to school with Thaniel. He sees it as a win-win situation- I get to go to school with my brother, who I do have an admittedly very close relationship with, and he doesn't have to worry about me being at home while he makes atrocious decisions and neglects his entire life. I'm not quite sure how he plans on keeping a clean house without me at home to do all the work, since he couldn't operate a vacuum safely if his life depended on it, but I'm sure he'll find a way to allow himself apathy. It is, I daresay, the only thing he's good at.

"I was ready to begin my senior year of mandatory learning when my summer courses ended," I inform my brother.

"Okay, but are you ready for the experience of being inside an actual high school?"

I try to suppress my grin as I ask, "Would it make a difference if I wasn't?"

He rolls his eyes and tosses an arm around my shoulder, starting towards the building and pulling me with him.

Almost instantly, Thaniel goes into overplanning mode. Our father isn't particularly interested in our wellbeing, so Thaniel cares about me enough for all three of us. Before we've even gotten to the stairwell, he's decided on my locker number, gotten my class schedule, and put a reminder in his phone for us to get my textbooks during lunch period. I glance at my schedule, which Thaniel has helpfully sent to my phone.

"Thaniel," I interrupt, cutting into his planning monologue.

He stops talking. "Yeah?"
