5 months before

"I'm bored" Joan groaned, Alice, Arnie, Joan and Celeste sat in a parking lot, that was the kind of place 1978 Shadyside was, you sat in empty parking lots getting high and watching your best friend fail at doing a kick-flip because that was all you could do

"I've almost got it" Celeste huffed, jumping back in her skateboard, "this is the time, I can feel it" getting on the board again, Celeste pushed off, flying across the concrete for only a few seconds, before jumping into the air, only to come crashing down on the hard concrete seconds later

"Booo" Alice called as Celeste lay on her back

Arnie shook his head "that's gonna leave a mark"

"Really graceful" Joan added "maybe work on the landing"

Celeste rolled her eyes, groaning as she sat up from the ground, probably with a newly minted bruise on her hip "Don't listen to Jo" Alice laughed "you fucking sucked" the three narrators sat on a dirty curb, one of which Celeste refused to sit

Celeste glared at Alice, giving her the middle finger "fuck all of you"

Joan gasped in sarcastic shock "I didn't do anything!"

"Shut up" Celeste grumbled "when are these goddamn drugs gonna kick in Arnie? It's been like an hour"

Arnie shrugged casually "I don't know, I got them from some chick, there wasn't any fine print" they'd all taken some pills, Celeste didn't listen to the name, but she was starting to think they had been scammed

"You've been scammed Arnie, that's what the fine print would say" Celeste shot back, picking up her skateboard that was looking a little worse for wear

Alice lit herself a cigarette "can we do something actually fun now?"

"Sure, got any ideas, Einstein?" Celeste got off the ground, the night was heating up, although it was early February, the familiar Ohio heat was returning

Alice glance around, as if an apple would fall on her head and inspiration would just strike her. Celeste walked over and plucked the cigarette from Alice's fingers, smoking it while shaking her head "there is literally nothing to do in Shittyside"

Then it struck Alice. She hopped up and stole the cigarette back from Celeste "I know what we should do" Alice smirked, and Joan stood up, brushing the dirt off her pants "And what's that exactly?" Joan questioned, walking over to Celeste and resting her head on her shoulder

"We should rename Shadyside" Alice's wicked grin only grew, even as her boyfriend looked at her like she was talking in a foreign language

Arnie was the final one to sit up from the curb, sighing "well it seems like the drugs are working for Alice" he rested a hand on her shoulder, which she swiftly pushed away

"No you morons" Alice grabbed Celeste by the forearm and dragged her out of the parking lot, into the street. She pointed down the road "I mean the fucking sign,"

Celeste stared at Alice, brow furrowed no concentration "I do not compute" Celeste mumbled, her eye searching Alice's face. Alice raised her hand and whacked Celeste backside the head, earning a small yelp from Celeste "we should graffiti the town sign,"

"Ohhhh" Joan exclaimed, she and Arnie had followed after Celeste and Alice, "you think we should change it to Shittyside instead of Shadyside"

"Thank you, god finally" Alice huffed, rolling her eyes

"We don't have any spray paint numbnuts," Celeste pointed out

Arnie cleared his throat "the hardware store is down the street"
