Zane's P.O.V

Sa pagbabalik namin, sinabi niya, "I'm applying in psychiatry."

"Ikaw?"

"It's perfect for me."

"You're a born surgeon, Azrail."

"Psychiatry's good," sabi ko.

"It's good."

I reached for his hand, held it, a graceful surgeon's hand that dissected to perfection, creating works of art that could heal. Yet, a simple scalpel nick through a glove could turn that hand into dripping scarlet death. He didn't want that.

Azrail's HIV had transformed our lives into a series of concessions and compromises. It was an invasive, intrusive, inculcating, in-your-face infection. We lived with it, and we bent. But when the next bend came, we weren't prepared for it.

National matching day, the day when future interns and residents are assigned their programs, comes in the last week of November. When graduation was only months away, several days before the match, the medical school dean called Azrail into his office and told him there were no spots for him in psychiatric residencies.

"Sorry?"
