Four maidens rush to the dining hall as breakfast for the Dimitrescu's comes to an end. Within a minute, the girls come back in with the plates and the jugs and hand them over to Margaretta. You stand in the corner with Diana and watch the maidens move around in uniformity. Emilia and a few other maidens scrub the counters and four other maidens wait with towels in their hands.

The chairs in the dining hall make a sound as they move. Lady Dimitrescu clears her throat, which makes you and Diana look at each other in confusion. You hear the clicking of heels fade slowly until you can't hear it anymore.

'She knows I'm here.' you realise.

"What's so amusing?" Emilia walks to you and Diana, with a question mark on her face. You don't even realise that you've been smiling like a little girl with a lollipop. You shake your head "Nothing." you reply.

"Well, you'd better wipe that smirk off of your face, darling. The laundry isn't going to hang itself." Emilia said in a sarcastic tone, which made you roll your eyes at her.

"Shall we eat breakfast and go?" Diana asks. You reply with a nod.

.

"No no! Just leave it there. I don't want you to hurt your hands any further!" Diana commanded when you reached for another bedsheet to hang. They were made of a thick material and hence, soaked up a lot of water, making them very heavy.

"Are you sure? There are three more. Let me help you. We can finish quickly." you really didn't want Diana to bear all of the burden.

"Don't you dare!" she pointed at me "You've already done enough. I'm surprised you even accepted to help me."

"Well, did I have a choice?" you smirk sarcastically which made Diana turn around and smirk back at you.

She hung the leftover three bedsheets and washed her hands. She walked over to you, while drying her hands on her apron. Her green eyes glistened as the sunlight hit her directly in the face.

"It's quite sunny, here." you look up.

"Yes, this part of the castle is sunny. Let's go."

You both walked in silence. A group of five or six girls, holding laundry baskets, were giggling and talking to each other as they walked in your direction. They didn't seem to notice you and Diana so you made way for them instead of walking right into them. You and Diana looked at each other and giggled.

"Diana?" you started.

"Hmm?"

You looked down at your palms "Why do they harm you so?"

Diana looked down while crossing her arms and let out a huff "They say..." she let out another huff "my blood tastes delicious." she finished and looked at you.

"They drink blood?"

"Yes. It's a compulsion. The lady mixes it with her wine. She can go through five to ten bottles a day."

"Why do they consume it?" your voice had a tinge of disgust in it.

"I don't really know. The daughters eat human meat too."

"What?!"

"Yes. The plates you carried yesterday and placed in front of them had a strange meat on it. Well, it was human flesh."

"And the jugs?"

"One has to have blood and the other, wine."

"I see."

Diana looked at you with a raised eyebrow "Don't worry, Y/N. You'll get used to it. It's only a matter of time."

You continue to look down as you both walk to the other end of the castle grounds.
