Chapter Fourteen

Of all the things in this world, David could have totally gone for a better choice.

"This marble is really smooth," Marissa commented as the back of her hand ran over the bare surface of the long kitchen island. "It looks flawless."

"As do you," Rosaline sassed and slipped onto the stool next to hers, dropping her plastic coke carelessly over the marble. "I seriously need to check out that salon of yours. They've got brilliant eyebrow plucking experts."

That's exactly why he could have gone for a better choice.

As a matter of fact, David thought that by inviting her closest friends over for a girls' night would actually be considered fun for her. He must have terribly interpreted her phrase: I'm not most women.

She respected his good intentions, but doing so behind her back wasn't a really good choice, especially if it were for something that didn't even appeal to her the least.

"Do you have anything fat-free to eat here?" Zoe asked, sparing a glance in her direction. She turned back to face the door of the fridge, on which a magnetic mirror was glued. She gripped the arm of her lipstick tighter and began to apply another layer over her full lower lip.

Definitely could have gone for a better choice.

Leila stepped on the tips of her toes in order to reach the cupboards. She spread the shutters open and stared through. "And that would be water," She replied admittedly.

"Thought so."

"Come on, Zoe. Don't be too harsh on her. It's not like you have anything to lose," Rosaline snarled, giving her a once over. Zoe glared at her from her spot in the kitchen.

Leila walked over to the island and pulled out the stool on Marissa's side. She slipped onto it and lazily rested her elbows over the counter, holding her chin in her hand.

On the bright side, she and Rosaline easily got along once more. Not like they once were, though. Ever since she had come over, things were really stable and warm that Leila doubted there might be something really wrong with her. But as the time flew by, Roux turned out to be a really nice person. She was bubbly and thoughtful, and had a very good sense of analyzing everything. Funny how a person's impression of someone could change in the blink of an eye.

And the same rule applies to Zoe. As much as Leila could never stand to be under the same roof with her cousin-in-law before, she came to realize that Zoe was a very deep person. Excluding all the bad moves she had done in the past, - which had been really difficult to do, for the record - Leila finally had the chance to get to know her better. She wasn't that shallow, slutty girl she had grown to believe she was. In fact, Zoe was far from shallow. The way she spoke made herself sound shallow. Slowly, Leila was beginning to recognize a lot of mistakes in personality. And the sad thing was the fact that she had once believed those mistakes were actually the right thing to do.

Spending time with someone honest and nice was really helping her get over the trouble she had been through. The girls' stay was actually able to make her forget about the late tragic events of her father's death, as well as her mother's sudden flight. But that didn't mean that her mind stopped going back to those thoughts at night, when she was safe and warm in her husband's arms. As he slept soundly next to her, she would sometimes cry herself to sleep, because those thoughts weren't easy to think of. Still, there was no denying she was gradually getting better.

And, regularly, with getting better, she was also getting fatter, and more exhausted. Going through pregnancy was no easy task that could be flown through. It was hard, and demanded responsibility. Consequently, Leila had been spending more time in the kitchen than ever before. And as a matter of fact, she was finally able to cook some of the basic meals, some of which she had loved. There was pasta - of course -, rice, chicken, French fries and steak. She still didn't muster enough courage to feed David from her own hand, though. It wasn't easy getting used to some-one's cooking style after spending more than her entire age eating from someone else's work. She was a little scared of his reaction, especially with how their last family dinner went like.
