Chapter Fifty Eight

Start from the beginning

"The group from yesterday are in a separate sleeping area. Think of it as mini cabins connected to the house. It helps give them some privacy and security. Lin, Erin and Zhang are still asleep, and the triplets have gone hunting, they won't be back until later in the day."

Wang Bao only realised after Alo finished talking that there were close to fifty people staying at the house, and it didn't even feel crowded, unlike the manner they had stayed in when rescuing another group of trafficked Werebeasts. While Wang Bao poured himself a bowl of muesli, Luka told him that Alo was going to finally show them the tunnel. Because Wang Bao's recovery had been the focus of everyone at the house, Alo hadn't been able to show them the tunnel yet, but this also meant Luka would be able to see the grand sight as well. Hearing this, Wang Bao scoffed down his light breakfast, then joined Mika and Luka to follow Alo. To their surprise, Alo only walked to the wall beside the staircase that led to the second floor.

Without saying anything, Alo pressed against one of the planks of wood in the wall, revealing a small keypad and thumb print scanner. The three young men watched curiously as Alo pressed his thumb against the scanner, then pushed in a six digit code. All of a sudden a quiet hissing sound could be heard through the wall, before the entire wall slid down into the floor, revealing a wide metal staircase that went deeper into the ground. The majority of the staircase was pitch black, and each flight would only light up once Alo was one step away. Wang Bao couldn't help but feel a little scared walking down the stairs, as the sound of their loud steps mixed with the lack of lighting made the entire walk down feel eerie. It was obvious Luka and Mika were feeling the same way because they were holding each other's hand tightly. When they finally reached the bottom, Mika, Luka and Wang Bao were surprised to be standing in an open room that looked more like a small warehouse. When Mika asked about the tunnel, Alo pointed to the wall beside the bottom of the stairs. Attached to the wall was another scanner and keypad, only this time, Alo had to scan both hands before typing a four digit code.

Unlike the hissing sound from earlier, a low hum resonated through the large empty room as the wall with the scanner lowered into the ground, along with the wall at the end of the warehouse. No one paid attention to the wall lowering beside Alo, as everyone was more in awe of the gigantic tunnel at the end of the small warehouse. Mika, Luka and Wang Bao all walked forward until they reached the very beginning of the tunnel. Compared to the staircase, Wang Bao doubted he would be able to see his hand in front of his own face, because of how dark the tunnel was. Aside from only being able to see a couple hundred metres thanks to the lights in the warehouse, Wang Bao could feel a slight breeze brushing along his face, and he turned to Alo who had walked over as well, asking him.

"How long is this tunnel? The lights aren't showing much."

Before answering, Alo walked ahead a few ten paces when a long row of lights lit up, heading deeper into the tunnel for a couple hundred metres. Both Mika and Luka jumped at the sudden change in lighting, and Alo pointed up at the large fluorescent lights while saying.

"The lights are motion sensitive to conserve energy. As for the length, it's maybe 102 kilometres, I haven't actually checked before."

Both Mika and Luka looked at one another before returning their wide stare to the tunnel; hearing that the tunnel could be over one hundred kilometres was enough to make their feet twitch, and Mika nodded towards the tunnel while asking Alo.

"Will we be walking that far?"

Alo couldn't help but chuckle lightly as he shook his head. Because the three people in front of him had been more focused on the tunnel, they hadn't noticed the three large vehicles sitting in the other room that was open. Alo pointed to the side room as he walked forward, and the rest of the group followed behind with a sense of quiet relief. The second room off to the side of the empty warehouse was more like a garage with two small buses and one van parked inside. Before heading over to the vehicles, Alo walked to the wall closest to the scanning device, and grabbed three sets of keys from the hooks. Alo held onto two sets, while he threw the third to Wang Bao, and asked.
