"She's her daughter. She's their sister." Clarity stressed turning to face her dad, referring to her grandmother and her mom's three brothers and three sisters. "Why aren't they coming?"
"It don't matter why." Nicholas shook his head. "Just that they aren't."
"I don't understand." Clarity put the plate down. "They've never come for holidays, not even mine or moms birthday. They don't even call or-or send a card. You'd think her death would be the one exception. There's this whole side of our family I've never even met. When the state took me for those few years none of them stepped forwards to take me in. Mom begged them and they did nothing. All those times we were struggling they never gave us a penny. When she was in her coma they never offered to help. Mom said they have money, lots of it and they just...Why don't they ever help? Why do they never come see us or-or answer when I call? I've tried to call. I've tried to connect. I don't get it. What did mom ever do that was so wrong to make them hate her, hate us so much?"
"Nothing, Clarity." Her father denied. "Your mom did nothing wrong. Her family..." her father sighed. "...they were supposed to do what's right. They had chances, moments where they could've done good. Could've helped us out like family should. Shown up for all those special days. But they didn't, we gotta accept that they aren't going to for this one. Your moms been dead to them a long time seems like."
"They're supposed to be my family too." Clarity denied putting the plate down on the counter. "It's like they don't even care about us. You'd think mom dying would be enough to make them realize we exist. Do they even know I exist?"
"Trust me, they know about you all right and they do care. They care a mighty ton believe you me." Her father pulled her in for a hug, but Clarity didn't return it. Instead holding her hands to her chest. Praying that she wouldn't shock her dad dead too. "It's best to let it go, your mom had us for family. We'll do right by her. That's all that matters." Her dad pressed a kiss into her hair. "Let's get some rest now. Wake's tomorrow, you've got all those friends coming."
"Yeah. They um wanted to help out." Clarity nodded her head. "They've all kind of become a second family and I was with them when you called so.." Clarity shrugged lightly her lips twitching upwards before they fell.
"I won't turn down a helping hand or two." Her dad chuckled and he smiled at his daughter putting his hand on her shoulder squeezing lightly. "Your mother would be so happy to hear that you have friends. Real ones to boot. Never thought I'd see the day you'd go beyond one at a time. That college friend of yours kick the bucket?" He joked, a bit of morbid humor sure, but it succeeded in getting a small laugh out of Clarity. Gideon died when Clarity was little kid, the cancer took her too soon from this world. Then she'd made a new friend in Josh in middle school and high school, but he died the day before Clarity got her MIT acceptance letter.
"Dad that's not-" Clarity couldn't help the little laugh knocking her fathers hand off her shoulder. "-that's not funny. Felicity is perfectly fine."
Her father held up his hands. "Alright, just checking. Your not seein' anybody new yet? There isn't some gal or guy or whatever type a person I gotta sit down on that couch. Polish my shot gun in front of all slow? Make sure they know if they hurt ya I'm gonna hunt em down?"
"Dad, you cannot be doin that to everybody I bring home." Clarity protested one hand resting on her hip. "You'll scare em off."
"I can and I will, the ones who really care about you will be brave enough to tough it out and stay. Might even step up my game and get my hunting knife too. You're all I got left sweetheart. Gotta make sure they understand hurtin you has consequences. Let that Tyler fellow off easy and look what happened with him. No good yellow bellied coward, backin out on you like that. What ever happened to that girl you wouldn't shut up about? What was her name? Sasha...Saraya..." Her dad snapped his fingers. "Sara."
