Need:
/nēd/ (verb) require (something) because it is essential or very important.

Gladstone knew the definition of need but he didn't know the meaning. He had everything he needed and everything he didn't. A condition of his luck. However, it made it hard for him to appreciate what he had.

Want:
/wänt,wônt/ (verb) have a desire to possess or do (something); wish for.

That being said Gladstone knew the meaning of want better than most because he only ever wanted for two things. The first was impossible: his parents, to bring them back. The other was completely selfish: Donald. The duck's attention never seemed to land on him for more than a second at a time.

He had promised himself he would never wish for those two things because it didn't seem right to waste all his good fortune on two impossible dreams so he spent his time intoxicated, in every sense of the word.

Intoxicated:
/inˈtäksəkādəd/ (adjective) drunk or under the influence.

He always was in some shape or form either by drugs, alcohol, money, or whores. That is unless he was in the presence of his family.

Family:
/ˈfam(ə)lē/ (noun) a̶l̶l̶ t̶h̶e̶ d̶e̶s̶c̶e̶n̶d̶a̶n̶t̶s̶ o̶f̶ a̶ c̶o̶m̶m̶o̶n̶ a̶n̶c̶e̶s̶t̶o̶r̶ assholes you see on holiday

He always sobered up around them. Well around Donald. He could care less about the rest of them. His rich uncle always told him his luck wasn't good enough. His grandparents were disappointed in him not wanting or having kids. The goodie two shoe cousin, Feathery, got in the way. Della, always getting them into trouble. Then there was Donald.

Donald just did his best to keep everyone safe and collect. Sure, he didn't care for Gladstone's luck but it was a nice change. That's what drew him to Donald in the first place he didn't pretend like everyone else. Donald didn't pretend to care for him or even like him.

Pretend:
/prəˈtend/ (verb) speak and act so as to make it appear that something is the case when in fact it is not.

This was something he knew well too. People pretended to like him. Pretended to have feelings for him. He was fine with it because he pretended too.

Gladstone was rather good at pretending. He pretended not to notice the way Della looked at him. He also pretended not to look at Donald the same way. He pretended it didn't hurt that Donald didn't look at him back. His favorite thing to pretend, however, was that he had a normal family.

But by definition...

Normal:
/ˈnôrməl/ (noun) the usual, average, or typical state or condition.

...he didn't.
