"We had sex, Naomi." he corrected with a tone of finality as he took a seat at the island. He didn't feel like going over the details of that night. He was so drunk he had barely remembered what happened.
"That's all you have to say? Really? But how come she gets to come over--someone you barely even know--and when I come over to see if you're okay, you turn me away! I still don't know what happened that night after I left."
"I didn't want to talk about it then and I don't want to talk about it now." he replied gruffly. He knew he wouldn't be able to tell Naomi about what happened without it breaking him apart. And that was the last thing he wanted.
"Well that's too bad, 'cause we are talking about it!"
Darryl couldn't take it anymore. He looked up towards her in a cold glare but she didn't flinch. "How many times do I have to tell you that I hate you for you to get that I don't want you here!"
"Until you start meaning what you say! You're not the only one who can tell someone's bullshitting." she countered.
Darryl stood from his stool leaning over the counter, towering over her. "So know you think you know me, Naomi? Okay, so maybe I don't hate you but don't think for a second that I would ever be like your Charming. You and I don't have a chance. You like guys you can trust and guys to take you horse-riding and all that other shit. I like sex! Plain and simple. I'm just really creative on how I get it. We both have secrets so how can any of us trust each other."
Darryl watched as Naomi's reserve broke as she began to shrink away in her stool and tears clouded her eyes. Even though the tears were his objective, it didn't mean he wanted to see them. "Naomi..." he began as he took his seat again.
"No, you're right. We can't trust each other." she said quietly with her sad and blank eyes trained on him. "But that's not my fault, that's yours."
Darryl remained still and quiet as he watched her body tremble from her whimpering. This wasn't what he was hoping for--far from it.
"I bet you'll get a good laugh once I tell you this." she said sarcastically, but no humor touched her eyes. "But since you had to know to story of how I lost my virginity--I guess I better humor you." She looked down at her fidgeting hands on the counter. Darryl straightened in his seat, alert.
"Remember, back in freshman year, how every Friday night we would hang out--just the two of us?" she paused looking up at him briefly, enough for him to nod his head. He loved those Friday nights. "I used to love those nights because we always found something different to do. There was never a dull moment when we were with each other. I looked forward to Fridays every week--but then Tameeka came into the picture." Darryl could hear the hatred in her tone at the mention of Tameeka. "She decided that you would be her next play toy and you started to play along..."
"Wait, is that what this is about? Jealousy? You were jealous of me and Tameeka?" Darryl interrupted, incredulously. How did I not see that?
"Not even close. Let me finish." she dismissed in a dull tone. "I tried to keep you away from her. She and the guys she usually hung out with were not the right crowd for you. I was just a friend looking out for another friend. But I guess in the end, my hatred of your relationship with her made her just more determined to go after you, to sink her teeth in you. So the weekly Friday night hangouts became 'whenever-I'm-not-fucking-Tameeka' Friday night hangouts. And I was fed up about it. It seemed like you chose new friends that can offer a lot more than I could."
"I remember that. You told me that you felt that way, and I fixed it." Darryl countered, remembering. For some reason the memories of those moments seemed like scribbles in his head.
