Chapter Twenty-Two

Start from the beginning

The sun sloped down the sky as we finally reached our end goal for today's run. I marked a traingle on the wall this time and turned around to begin our run back. Dominic tried starting conversations a couple times but none of them lasted. Finally, as the sky started fading orange, we rounded the corner and saw the glade. Newt was waiting, as usual, against a tree. He stood when he saw us, walking over to the door.

"We're still good for tonight, right?" Dominic asked as we ran closer to the glade.

I almost completely forgot about that.

"...Yeah sure," I reply.

Dominic nodded and jogged to the map room to keep track of our progress.

"Hey," Newt smiled as I ran up.

"Did I miss anything?"

"Nope. Paul cut the top half of one of his fingers off though."

"Ow. That's what he gets for always wanting to use the big knives," I laugh. Paul is a slicer who has claimed the big pork knives for his own. He says he can't work with any other knives. The gladers like to tease him about it all the time; they say he treats the knives like his own shuck children.

"You ate today right?" Newt asked as he pulls me closer.

"Yes of course I did."

"Just checking," he says as he picks a piece of ivy from my hair. "C'mon, let's go eat."

-time skip-

Dinner flies by and soon I'm going on another walk with Newt. He's telling me about what he accomplished in the garden, when Dominic suddenly runs up to us. I realize I had forgotton about him wanting to hangout with me. Newt stops talking and our walking comes to a halt.

"Y/N? Remember what I asked you earlier? You said you would..." Dominic says.

"Oh yes. Sorry Dominic I forgot."

"Sorry, what's happening?" Newt asks. He's gripping onto my hand and is looking to me for answers.

"Dominic asked me if I wanted to hangout tonight. He said there was a party of some sort?" I answered. I realized I didn't really want to go with Dominic, but I didn't want to be rude. "Speaking of that..Dominic is it okay if Newt comes? You said we were just playing games at the party and stuff right?"

"Well I was sort of hoping you know... Just you and I?" Dominic responded.

I looked at Newt who's eyebrows were furrowed as he looked at Dominic.

"If she's going to this 'party' I'm going too," Newt said.

Dominic shrugged although he looked a little frustrated, "Fine. Follow me."

Newt and I walked behind Dominic as he led us into the deadheads. The air was hot and I could hear the chatter of many people up ahead. Soon we entered a clearing full of gladers. The patch of trees was lit by tons of torches nailed into trees. Looked like a fire hazard to me, but nobody else seemed to care. The forest was alive with boys drinking Gally's ale and mingling about. Some people were even sitting amongst the trees, overlooking the party. Almost immediately after walking through the clearing we were surrounded by bodies. I don't know where Dominic went but Newt was still holding my hand tightly from behind me. Someone comes up and shoves a drink into my free hand. The glass feels cool against my palm and I take a sip.

"How do you like that?" Newt laughs as I choke on the stinging liquid. It tastes tangy and definitely has a large amount of alcohol in it. Where would Gally even get alcohol to make this?

Something about the drink left an aftertaste that made you itch for more each time. It didn't even taste remotely good, but I loved the way my body seemed to fizz and spin with every new taste. When I lifted the glass for a third gulp Newt reached around me and pushed the glass down.

"Whoa there. Not too fast. You don't need much of that to get you swaying on your feet," he said.

I realized he was right and left the remains of the drink sitting on a log. Newt and I talked amongst the crowd for a bit laughing when a drunk person stumbled into a tree beside us. The moon was now high in the sky and looked orange from the torchlight. Someone was banging a beat on some kitchen pans and I think a rhythm was being played off of a drum. More drinks were pushed into my hands as they slowly emptied and disappeared one after the other. People were dancing around me but I was starting to have trouble distinguishing faces. I turned in circles trying to see someone familiar and tripped over somebody's foot. I stumbled forward and landed on someone's chest. I felt their arms around me, steadying me from the fall.

"You, are very drunk." the voice said. It was Newt. I looked into his face. He also had the glee of alcohol in his eyes, but he looked a lot more sober than I felt. His blonde hair seemed aflame in the fire's light. For a second I thought it was actually on fire, but I suspected that's what I get for drinking.

"I think it's time to go to bed," Newt said.

"Just a little longer," I answered. Everything seemed fuzzy, but I didn't want to leave the party yet. I enjoyed the feeling of being enveloped in the alcohol's comfort. Newt only laughed and repeated something about bed. I tuned out his voice and wrapped my arms around his waist, resting my head on his chest; his voice stopped. I couldn't tell half of what I was doing. I just knew I wanted to be closer to him. His arms wrapped around my back and I felt his chin rest on my head. The feeling of safety and happiness overwhelmed me and I lost myself to the moment. Eventually sounds of the real world began to filter in. Voices came back.

"No, she's way too drunk," said Newt's voice.

"C'mon, that'll make her more fun." Dominic's voice.

"What are you guys talking about?" I asked. My voice sounded slurred and off. I raised my head off of Newt's chest and saw Dominic standing beside me with two drinks in his hands.

"Just that you are about to go to bed now. Come on," Newt said and started to pull me away from Dominic.

"Actually, Y/N. How would you like to come with me? We have drinks and I have someone who wants to meet you," Dominic said. He spoke in a soft voice. As if he was trying to lure an animal out of a bush, into the open.

"Sounds good to me," I said and pulled away from newt to walk over to Dominic.

"What she meant was that she's going to pass," Newt corrected me and took my hand.

"No, no," I yawned and shook off his hand. "I'll be fine Newt. Dominic is going to introduce me to someone."

"Yeah, Newt. She'll be fine," Dominic repeated with a smirk.

Before Newt could protest I felt an arm link into mine and I was whisked away into the crowd once more. I panicked with the feeling of being lost in the faces but remembered Dominic was taking me somewhere...right? Another drink was lifted to my lips and I gulped down a liquid. My head couldn't process anything or what was happening, so I let myself be led through the crowd as the music drummed louder throughout my head. I'd certainly never felt anything like this sensation before. I wonder where Dominic is taking me.
