TWO MONTHS LATER

AMBER P.O.V.

“You know why I asked you to come in here right?”

She didn’t look at me she just twiddled her thumbs, looking out my office window.

“Every week you willingly come to these meetings. Sit in the back with your hoodie and glasses and say nothing.”

“I listen.”

“Listening is good. But it will not help you. You need to let out whatever you’re holding in.”

“I’m not holding nothing in.” She looked down at her feet, then down at her hands.

“Then why keep coming back?”

She was silent. She just shook her head and shrugged as tears formed in her eyes.

“It’s okay.” I got up from behind my desk went over to her and wrapped my arms around her.

“I’m sorry. I’m ruining your nice shirt.” She laughed a bit as she took the tissue I handed her and wiped her eyes .

“Girl this shirt means nothing to me. What matters is that we get you well. Talk to me. You can start by telling me your name. I don’t even know that much. ” I held her hand.

She wiped her eyes some more then said, “Onika.”

“Onika.” I smiled. “Now we’re getting somewhere. And what are you feeling right now Onika?”

“You can call me Nicki.”

“Okay Nicki, tell me what’s going on.”

“I’ve just been going through so much.”

“Like what?”

“My mother died and…and… I didn’t even get a chance to say good-bye.” She started to tear up again.

“I’m sure she knew you loved her.” I rubbed her back.

She shook her head. “No. We hadn’t  spoken in years. And I mean years. I just feel so bad that I let it go on for so long.”

“Why?” I wiped her eyes.

“She didn’t agree with my lifestyle.”

“What do you mean your lifestyle?”

She was silent, just playing with her hands.

“Love, this is a zone of no judgment. Whatever is said here is between me and you.”

“I…I’m...gay. And when I told her, she told me never to contact her again.”

“There was nothing you could do about that Nicki.”

“No, but I could have made more of an effort ya know.”

“So did the guilt lead you to suicidal thoughts?”
