Butterfly Poem

Butterfly

Friendly insect-aviator

Seeing you flit around in front of me

I want to take your picture, want to see

You fly with my camera ready so closely

But you were too fast for me

Flitting about, here and there

Something worth seeing, worth a stare

Beautiful monarch creature oh so fair

Wings of orange black and white

Graceful wings made for flight

I did not know how to coax you without a shout

And so I took a chance and put my arm out

Somehow you knew and I get to gloat

Because you landed just like a jet on a carrier boat

You have just a little tiny brain

But you knew without refrain

That I wanted to have you to look at again

And that I would not cause you harm or pain

I snapped my picture cautiously

And then raised my arm and you flew free

It saddens me that so many of your kin

Never get set free once they are in

Stuck in a display case with a pin

For a season after you were a little worm

You changed so much, your wings grew strong and firm

For a season in a cocoon you hid

And I am very glad you did

Butterfly framed and on my wall

Thank you for hearing nature’s call

You didn’t know anything last fall

Now you fly, pretty good all in all
