In Northern Climes

A Poem Upon the First Report of Snowfall

Another season gone, another chance is lost

As another summer ends again

Complacency has its awful cost

No matter if you wield sword or pen

A poet often struggles long

Words eventually come

If one’s heart is pure and mind is strong

And you learned your lessons when you were young

In just two more weeks I leave this land

For Hawaii, surf and sun

To gaze at the blue water, the skies and sand

To remind myself life must be fun

But in truth as nice as paradise can be

Never will I forget

This precious land ice cold and free

Until I pay it my final debt

This northern land, this frozen home

This place wrought by God for all

Where you see the sky alive with a glow

And the brilliant colours of the fall

This unforgiving place is where I was born

And where I met the love of my life

Though I may travel far to a distant shore

I will dream of her one day being my wife

Summer time may end for her and for you

But as I venture far and wide

I will keep one eye open for a love that’s new

To carry me upon love’s swift tide

It is said love is best in springtime

And I will say I once loved a person then

But now past 40 my life feels more like fall

And my ageing heart is still on the mend

Love your family I say to you, and try to find someone

Someone to care for, to share your years

Because anyone is better than no one

Don’t pass away embalmed in tears

Don’t give up on the hope of a life of happiness and fun

It can come to you, it can be real

New love is a life newly begun
