The Land of My Father

When I was just ten years old, right in the spring

You made up your mind and simply decided to bring

My brother and I to Denmark, to the land where you came from

That you left many years ago just after serving your former King

You had told us so many stories about it

Of knights and of castles that I won’t forget

We learned so much from that one month vacation

That I feel I will be forever in your debt

It is in times like this my dear Father

When I look back on all that you did

And I feel that I am so very lucky

To be one of your privileged kids

But it wasn’t like you had money and spoiled us

And then stood back and let us raise hell

You walked us through all of our journeys

I think you raised us exceedingly well

We needed to see where we came from

We needed to visit that magical land

Denmark was worth the money and then some

Though the money was earned by the work of your hands

There is one thing I wanted to make clear

One thing I have to say to you Dad

On that trip I learned about who you were

And it made me a little bit sad

To think of how you crossed the ocean

And worked so hard, then by luck met our mom

On this Father’s Day I am filled with emotion

Because of all the great things that you have done

You brought up a close family of hard workers

You lived a good life and are loved

Though sometimes your new land was a circus

But a resting place waits for you up above
