Night Poem

GO OUTSIDE AND LOOK UP NOW

As the night marches on and rest eludes me

I wonder why this world must confuse me

I want to break away from plain and boring

I want this night to end and revel in the morning

There are so many things to see

Many ways to feel happy, to feel free

No one can tell me I don’t have it coming

Night marches on I hear the drumming

There is no lovely one at my side

I lost my lovely one and part of me died

I want to say truthfully to you

Don’t long for something new

Don’t lose your true love because of pride

I wish I were out so far away from this city

In the dark corners the night is so pretty

A million stars to see

No one to tell that I am too blind to see

There always was just one girl for me

No need to entertain and be forever witty

I love this land that I call home

I never feel I am unknown

I can wander all alone

Sea to sea always among my own

It was great to grow up in this place

And know I didn’t have to face

The unforgiving, and the fighting of the human race

For mere survival, at least until I was old enough to take my place

I wish that I had thought things over more

Before I stepped through that final door

The one between being boy and man

I could have used a better plan

Of course it was tough to grow up in some ways

Not all my teen years were happy days

But I made it all the way

To the place where I could say

When I want to work and when I can play

Where I need to go and how long I can stay

Thrift and better judgment are now my guide

I must put vain and shallow things aside

Love those most who like me the least

Care for the poor and sick as though I were a priest

I know one day life will be done

I hope that then things will have just begun

Love is more than a woman and a man

Love is caring all you can

I watch the sheets of fire in the Northern sky

Lit up by stars with the moon close by

And think of those I will see again when I die

Drink in the beauty, try not to cry
