Chapter 31 – Martin POV

I watched as my brother, sister, father and mother turn their backs on me from inside the house, still in shock that they’ve left me to handle this disaster we all created. None of them – sans Lucy – had a problem standing by my side ten years ago; Chris who cared about Rainy the most hadn’t fought me on my decision. Granted now I knew that Adina played me for a fool, those leaving will make others challenge my ability to lead this pack, their trust in me surely a mistake if they have children.

Still, even with what we learned, they were looking for someone to pass blame, and they chose me, abandoning Beth and me in a time when they should’ve stayed strong by my side, put up a united front. Punishing Adina wasn’t all this pack would be hit with I knew that and for them to leave me to receive the brunt of the punishment remaining was cold and heartless in many ways.

I understood greatly the pain and suffering Rainella and those children went through but, we were a pack, Chris could have brought her home, where she belonged and given everyone in this pack a chance to make it up to her. Instead, he let Logan whisk her away, demanding a choice be made by where my parents, sister and brother would remain. Of course they’d chose to go, my mother and father, Lucy, none of them were in positions of importance like myself.

The phone rang, pulling me away from my internal musing, “Hello, Alpha DeLuca speaking,” I said professionally.

A man cleared his throat, “Alpha DeLuca, this is Alpha Brookdell from Westmeadow Pack,” the familiar voice of my longtime friend, Winston Brookdell on the other end.

Smiling, I relaxed – a good friend is what I needed right now, before remembering that his pack as of late had suffered many attacks, “What can I do for you Winston? Are you having problems with rogues again?” I asked worriedly.

“Actually, Alpha DeLuca, I’m calling to speak of ending our current alliance,” he said business like, professional, cold and blunt taking me by surprise. Pulling the phone away, I checked the screen; surely I was mistaken, “Well…” I started slowly, “May I ask why you desire to end our ongoing treaty?” anger coating the last few words, but we needed that treaty in place, it strengthened our southern boundaries.

“Alpha DeLuca, my reasoning is none of your concern,” Winston replied sharply, disrespectfully, a growl forming deep, released as my hand crushed my cellphone. A knock sounds from behind, startling me; I turn sharply to see my mate, my ire lessening with her presences.

“Mate? Are you okay?” she asked tenderly, “Wins – Alpha Brookdell,” I started correcting myself, “he called to say he no longer wishes to have an alliance with our pack,” I saw the words blankly, thinking of exactly what this does to our packs, placing that territory line, diminishing our running land down significantly.

“Did he give you a reason why? Maybe I can speak to his mate, Jaclyn? We are friends after all,” Beth offered sweetly, “My parents are also still in that pack,” she said fondly of Westmeadow Pack.

Thinking of the pack, pushing aside my pride I give her the go ahead, needing to know why this sudden disassembly of our treaty, it wouldn’t have anything to do with recent events. There must be a feud amongst pack members; maybe we can bring forth some sort of mediation.

“Momma, daddy,” my mate croons to her parents after a moment waiting for them to answer, “how are you guys doing?” she asked politely, as she always does, inquiring about their health, safety and other members of their family.
