CHAPTER 2

At two-thirty p.m., Sam and I went our separate ways. Sam met her husband, Paul, outside the café as I walked back to the library with a sleeping Tahlia in the pram in front of me. Sam waved to me as she drove off with Bridget in the backseat and Paul beside her, driving.

Driving. I'd passed the learner's test almost a year ago now, but I hardly got the chance to drive. Tay was still on his probationary licence, so he wasn't legally permitted to be my driving supervisor, and so I usually had to drive around town with Dad or Becky when I had the time. It was easy to drive their new car - they had finally been able to afford a better car than the bomb-of-a-car station wagon. They now owned a smooth car that was simple to drive, seeing as it was an automatic. I worried about when I would get the chance to drive Tay's car, seeing as it was a manual. But, I wouldn't worry of that for a few months still.

Sooner than expected, I was at the library. It was now three p.m., and the roads were starting to become busier and busier. I found an empty seat out the front of the library, and sat down in the shelter from the overcast clouds. Tay would be here any minute. He was never more than ten minutes late.

Before I had time to let my mind wander back to the events of at café, Tay's red car pulled up into the car park. I couldn't help but notice another man in the passenger seat. That must be his cousin.

Both men got out of the car and I noticed Tay's face lighten when his eyes met mine. Tay led his cousin towards me. I stood up from the seat and took the brakes off of the pram. Before I could even manoeuvre the pram, Tay had his arms wrapped around me and brought his lips onto mine. I managed to keep one hand on the handle of the pram.

He pulled away abruptly, probably remembering his cousin standing not five feet away. "Hey," Tay breathed, caressing my face with his breath.

"Hi," I smiled. "Is this the cousin?" I whispered, so that only he would hear.

Tay sighed and whispered, "Yep."

He turned around and stood between Sean and I. "Nas, this is my cousin Sean. Sean, this is my fiancée, Nasettia." I couldn't help but notice Tay's voice emphasize the words 'my fiancée.' Maybe I knew why Tay wasn't looking forward to Sean's stay. Maybe Sean was another one like the café salesman.

I took a few steps forward, pulling the pram along behind me. I stretched my hand out to shake Sean's. "Nice to meet you, Sean," I smiled.

"Well hi there," he replied, eagerly taking my hand and shaking it vigorously. Tay looked like he was going to vomit at the contact, whilst Sean was grinning.

Sean's strength was incredible, and it did hurt. I flexed my fingers as soon as he released my hand. I took a look at Sean, and discovered that he looked nothing like his cousin.

Sean was a very big man. Not muscularly big, but more... overweight. He was wearing a very loose black shirt (in the middle of winter?) and tracksuit pants. His face was rectangular, with round folds of skin everywhere and his skin was pale white. He was so... huge that I could see folds of skin from under his arm pits through his shirt. And he had what were commonly referred to as... man boobs.

My face was probably displaying a very rude expression, so I pretended to be distracted by Tahlia.

"Let's go," Tay announced.

I nodded and pushed Tahlia to the direction of the car. When I got to the steps, I was about to call Tay to help carry the pram down, but Sean was already lifting the front of it.

"Let me get that," he'd offered.

I didn't know how to reply. I looked to Tay and he had fury written all across his face. "Thanks," I replied in a barely audible whisper. I tried giving Tay a look which hopefully told him to calm down; relax. He sighed in a huff as we reached the car.
