Keaton Gets Insecure ~ unedited

The boys were doing a live performance at a mall and you promised Keaton that you'd go to the event for support. Drew announces that the last song they'll be performing is "XO". Your leg starts to shake. You knew Keaton struggled with this song, but you hoped he would pull through. The song went smoothly, Wes earned a few cheers from the crowd with a inappropriate hip thrust.
Your eyes stay on Keat as his solo comes up. His voice is raspier than normal but he hits every note perfectly. He hits the last note with a huge roughness. He hesitates before finishing the song with the boys. You see him panicking and you move out of the crowd to meet him when he comes off stage. As soon as the set is finished Keaton leaves his guitar and rushes to you leaving Drew and Wes to greet fans.
He sees you immediately. He hugs you tight, crumpling into you like a small child. You sit down with him still embracing you. He's shaking and all you can do is hug him to get him to calm down. "Keat, what's wrong?" He looks up at you, eyes red. When he gives you an answer he can't look in the eyes.
"I couldn't hit it, I sounded horrible. In front of everyone. The fans are gonna think I'm a fraud. I'm afraid I ruined everything for the guys." He's shaking again. You pull his face towards yours. Looking right at him, you give him your honest opinion.
"Keaton. You didn't mess up and you sounded great. So your voice was deeper than normal. Big deal. I mean if anything it was hot." You tell him. He rests his forehead on yours and calms his breathing. "If you're determined to hit that note than I'll help you through this ok? I promise." He nods and closes his eyes. You hug him and hold him as he yawns.
You feel like your taking care of "Baby Keats" but you don't mind seeing the vulnerable side of him. He shifts in your hold so his head is in your lap. You lightly play with his hair until he falls asleep. Wes and Drew come walking backstage and nod to Keaton on your lap. You hold your finger up to your mouth and shush them. Wes puts his hands up walking away, Drew sets his water bottle down and comes to perch beside you.
"He's out?" Drew hushes. You answer with a nod, not taking your eyes off the sleeping boy. A smile cracks through Drew's exterior. "He doesn't show this side often. He doesn't like feeling vulnerable." You look at Drew. "He hasn't been sleeping you know." Your eyes widen. "I- I didn't." He looks around. "All of this has been a lot to handle for him."
He gestures to the space behind you and you know he means the publicity and music career. He continues, "Not being able to go to school without being mobbed. Being out in public. The constant recording, It was easier for me and Wes because we aren't in school, we have time. Keaton's still a kid though. This was a tough transition, I'm just happy he has you. You're good for him."
He squeezes your shoulder, "Let him sleep. Its the first time I've seen him rest in weeks." You smile in understanding yet confused about how the boy you loved could be hiding so much from you. You're absent mindedly playing with his hair when Keaton shifts. "I didn't want to worry you." He mumbles. "I could handle it on my own." His eyes are still closed and he only half conscious. "Keaton we're a team."
He rolls over and faces away from you still trying to absorb sleep. He yawns before finishing his final sentence. "I know but I love you too much to put you through that." He sniffles a little and curls tighter. You pause. "I love you too Keat." You rest your head against the back of the couch and decide to rest your eyes for just a bit. A quiet yawn escapes your lips and you slip into dream land. You're just as tired as Keaton and you both need your rest.
Everything is as its supposed to be. Life is good.
