A Comet's Tail
©2012, Olan L. Smith (edited 2016)
The spirit's tether is difficult to sever
Assuredly this fate was destined to last forever―
Our life is ordained for persistence, of this I am certain
When our life's force grows dimmer; it is not the final curtain.
Rather a call, "Front and center," stand proud upon this stage
The heavens are yours to roam and explore and thus courage
A comet sprinkles the night sky with dazzling residue―
Sol creates its tail whose orbit you pursue
Flung outward deep in darkness a soul will return
Come tomorrow or a thousand more, an escape to discern?
Our duty lays with Helios, provider of life―his magnitude
Holds fast what is his and we possess eternal gratitude.
